Transmission Seal Leak - Manual

In doing a complete front end rebuild on my 99 V70 (NA, manual transmission) I replaced both axles. The passenger side axle is from FCP, the driver's side from advance auto. Disassembly and reassembly went surprisingly smoothly, but I'm now battling a leak of fluid from the passenger side transmission seal.

Once the leak was discovered, I pulled the passenger side axle and replaced the seal with the Volvo part (6843481). But it is still leaking.

Suggestions on how to proceed?

I went through a similar problem with one of my cars that has an automatic - I think it was the Platinum - when I used some rebuilt axles from O'Reilly Auto Parts. They were Cardone brand as I recall.

The rebuilt axles had horrible vibration, along with the leaks, so I replaced them with a set of new EMPI axles from FCP and things slightly improved in the vibration department but it fully fixed my leak. I also had replaced my seals when I put the first set of axles in.

The last axle I bought was from RAXLES for the '94 with a stick and it has been perfect with no leaks and no vibrations.

Check to make sure the axle is sealing all the way. If it isn't, it could leak like you are seeing.

I had this happen to me. In my case it was a brand new, OEM seal that still leaked and we installed it correctly, with an OEM axle being used. It happens.

The carrier bearing wouldn't have bolted up if the axle wasn't sealed properly.

Personally I'd start by getting a new seal in there.

Thanks for the input. I ordered up two seals - the OE Volvo part again and also found an aftermarket part by Corteco. One of these should seat properly against the axle. I'll update after I get back under the car this weekend.
