850 Jumping out of gear

Post by cgullick35 »

I bought a 95 850 a couple of months ago. Its a non turbo automatic. Lately it has been jumping out of gear and when I take off at a red light or stop sign the car acts like the tires a locked up. It revs normally and doesnt spin it just will not go! The trans fluid is really thin and doesnt look like the normal trans fluid in my other cars... the car has 91k miles on it. Any ideas?

Welcome to MVS,

How does the transmission fluid level look? If it is high and the fluid looks thin then you could have a breach in the transmission cooler in the radiator. I would try draining the fluid and pay particular attention to what it looks like as it begins to drain. Transmission fluid will float on top of coolant so it isn't always apparent on the dipstick.

Normally the contamination goes both ways and you would see transmission fluid contamination in the coolant overflow tank.

How many miles are on the transmission? When was the last time the fluid was flushed?

confused_al... The fluid level show to be ok. Lee... So glad you sad something I checked my coolant and it is low! Worrying about my trans and could have run it hot :( The coolant was nice and green just low. Does this mean I am leaking coolant into my trans? FCPGroton I bought the car with a blown motor. It is showing 91 thousand on the cluster but I am b=not sure at how many actual miles are on the trans. I have put a total of 600 miles on the car and have not serviced or flushed the trans.

Is the dash arrow flashing?
My car had oil in the coolant/ water in trans, the fluid was chocolate milk colored. Check the radiator overflow/ reservoir for oily substance floating

el chopperfreak ... No I have not seen a arrow flashing. My bf owns an import shop and when I got off work I took it too him. He said my fluid was ok and pulled 2 codes from the car, P1418 and P500. My cruise control does not work and when the car acts up at take off the speedometer hesitates to work. He is leaning towards a speed sensor after reading online some. As far as my coolant level being low, I have no idea where the coolant is going if it is not mixing with my trans fluid. He offered to maybe try and sell the car but I have only $900 in it minus the IPD parts I have purchased. I dont want to get rid of it.

Yep, a speed sensor (on the back of the transmission) could do weird things like this. Since you've got the code for it, that's what I'd replace.

P1418 is for the EGR temp signal. The port in the throttle body often gets clogged up and can throw EGR codes for low flow or temperature. Try scraping it out and see if that code goes away:

Get your hands on a '94 or '95 ECU without EGR - then do the SAS delete procedure (just search the site for it) with a diode in place. ECU's run about $20 at a junkyard; that will take care of that constant check engine light being on since that's been done.
