Need Fuel Pressure Regulator Part # 96 850

The fuel pressure regulator failed on my 1998. It choked my car from take off and it was blowing black smoke out the exhaust.I don't know about a 1996, but on the 1998 (the same in most respects, though little things were changed between the 1997 and 1998 models underneath) it's behind the power steering rack inside the right front wheel.

Jblackburn....can you post a picture of location of your fpr & also a picture of fpr.

I changed coolant in my car tonight and saw something strange in front driver's side wheel area(underneath the car).I think that it could be that "mistery" fpr.

On my car, the rollover valve hose was ruined, I replaced it, but the code did not go away. I finally got rid of the code when I fixed (cut out the cracks and reconnected) the line that disappears over the fender.

It sounds like your vac lines may be hooked up screwy. I'll go take a look at mine, also a 96 NA 850, tell you what I see regarding purge valve etc.

Thanks Erik, The hose to my rollover valve was broken completely off. Replaced it a week ago and no codes have come back. I can see the first 10 or 12 inches of the hose over the fender and it looks good. I have it pinched off a few inches from the canister and that has stopped the loss of vacuum, so the connection to the canister must be good. On my 850 the line to the tank is the same one that goes to the FPR and rollover valve. Could there be 2 vacuum lines to the tank? If there is the one from over the wheel well it must go inside the body because it sure isn't underneath.

Can anyone tell me what is causing the loss of power? I have to make a trip over the mountains and it can't possibly make it in it's present condition.

OK the vac lines I can see, are set up as you describe. Manifold to the circular valve, from there to the evap canister. That valve is supposed to open and apply vacuum only when the vehicle is pulling fumes into the charcoal canister, like right as startup or something (I don't know the details of the evap system). I also do not know how/where the FPR figures in, did not dig that deeply looking at my car.

jimmy57 says that line up over the wheel hooks back in to the fuel system near the tank. So it sounds like you have found the source of a vacuum leak: somewhere between your clamp point and the tank. A smoke test may help a lot to sort it out. But that should be a minor leak, like an evap system code, not enough to make the car run poorly.

I don't have any new ideas of what is causing the power loss, hopefully someone else does. I guess I would check the throttle body, make sure it and the IAC are clean, they can give similar symptoms. No codes?

Thanks for checking your lines Erik. The purge valve sure doesn't make sense to me. Since they are running the FPR off the evap system, the valve would have to be open whenever the engine is running for the FPR to work correctly.

There must be someone out there that knows what might be causing my lack of power. Does anyone read these posts anymore?

...My biggest concern is the extreme lack of power which may have nothing to do with the Evap system. The more throttle- the less power! My 0 to 40 time is 12 seconds with a very light throttle. At full throttle 0 to 40 is 37 seconds! In first gear it won't go over 3400 RPM so you must let off on the throttle to get a shift. In second gear the limit is 3000 Rpm. In third gear it's even less. All this is the same with the MAF connected or disconnected.

This usually happens when maf is bad or dirty with an addition of unstable rpm's at idle.

In what condition is your pcv system?

Also we had one member who also had a lack of power because of aftermarket fuel pump.
Sometimes the car acts like nothing is wrong & sometimes it acts underpowered.

Do you have any symptoms like,black or blue smoke from the exhaust?When fpr goes bad it's symptoms are usually black smoke from the exhaust,it also stands for a bad maf.

I really don't know what is going on with your car.

Are there any pending codes stored in the engine ecu?

You can try with disconnecting the battery overnight in order to reset engine ecu & fuel trim.

As I said in a previous post, There are no codes. FPR and fuel pump are working perfectly, 39 PSI at Idle and a steady 43 PSI at full throttle at all RPMs. Lack of performance is the same with MAF connected or disconnected, others are telling me that means the MAF is OK. Are they wrong? No smoke-just no power.

Since the problem seems to be worse with WOT, what about the throttle itself?

- clean the throttle body
- clean the IAC
- check the TPS. This one is tricky, I think you can monitor resistance through the range, you'll have to do some searching. A more certain way is to put on a TPS that you know works, just picking up one from a junkyard would be fine they are all the same 93-98.
