E-Code Install in 940 - What Bulbs?

Post by RepairmanJack »

What are the bulb-types that the aftermarket e-code headlight use?

All that Daniel Stern told me was OSRAM 70/65. There are separate housing for the Foglights, Low Beams and High Beams.
I figure that they do not *all* take the same bulb.

I'd like to complete the conversion this weekend. Does anyone know what Bulb Numbers I need to finish up this project?

Background

1995 945 w/o nose foglights. Replaced one frosted block with a newer unit but even now it looks poor. The surviving original is awful. So in the name of safety (and style), I picked up a set of cheapo e-code headlights from FCP (Boxed as Scan-Tech, marked as DJAuto) and the bodywork/hardware to covert the non-fog headlight over to Euro-spec.

I know these things are cheapo knock-offs, but they will still be 100% better than the plastic blocks that the car came with.

The physical conversion was straightforward.

Aside from working out the split for the corner lighting and routing the old headlight wires into the new connector blocks, I'm ready to go.

Nobody seems to have written a guide on this, and the few site I found discussing it were specific to the 240 and the simpler headlights.

Any help is appreciated.

PS. If anyone has a used hella bumper foglight that they'd like to part with, please let me know

Seems I asked either the ultra-obvious question or the question that nobody knows the answer to.

So I hauled my entire headlight assembly into the local Autozone. The clerk of course wanted to look it up, but that didn't help.

I tried a variety and discovered the following per side:

x1 H7 for the main high/low headight (55w)
x1 H3 for the high-beams (55w or 100w)
x1 H3 for the fog lights (100w).

The H7s have a Y-shaped prong arrangement. The other two have a half-circle and square notch. H3s should fit perfectly, but you can put an H4 in, if you bent up the third tab.

I've been asked to put together a descriptive file of the conversion process which will likely end up over at Brickboard.com

I only had a list of bulbs for the UK version which is slightly different to those you have used.

Why not on this site? It will be a good addition to the Repair Database.

Ack - Posted the wrong information.

The dual-filament bulbs are H4 three-prong bulbs 55/70, high beams are H3 55w, and fogs are H3 100w.

Writing up the eCode conversion process for the brickboard ensures that it will become part of the 700/900/90 FAQ file - which is the prime reference source for folks owing such a car.
