Anti freeze smell 98 v70xc.

Post by Nuttydriver »

I recently changed the heater core in my v70xc due to a leak. When I was topping off the coolant reservoir I noticed the pressure cap was cracked. I didn't really think much about it cause it wasn't leaking or overheating. I drove it like that for two months and the other day it caught my eye so I replaced it with a new one. The heat was working great and I couldn't smell any antifreeze until I replaced the cap. Now every time I turn the heat on I smell antifreeze. My question is do they make these caps at different pressures or are they all the same?

I would guess the following:

You either have a pin hole leak in the core (especially if a low cost/quality replacement one) or you have a leaky line/connection from the replacement job. It was probably such a small leak it held fluid.

With a leaky pressure cap, it probably never got enough pressure built up to leak out thge tiny leak or pin hole. When you replaced the broken pressure cap it now builds proper pressure but leaks out at the core.

Probably not what you want to hear but I am guessing you still have a (different) leak at your heater core.

Did you use a green cap? Green is the preferred color. Not sure why but it is.

Yeah it's a green cap. I stopped at the dealer took my bad one in and they gave me the same thing. I'll have to look around the junkyard and see if I can find any different ones. The two I have are rated at 150 kpa which equals 19-20 psi. I think if I found one that was about 14 psi it would be good to go.
