Several years ago I had a similar problem on a 240 and a dealer told me how to fix it.
The rain water from around the windscreen area drains off between the outer and inner wings. It does not have any conduits so pours down unhindered.
Inside the car in front of the front door pillars you will see two card trims. Take them out - it is quite easy - and check behind them for any places where the waterproof membrane is not fastened down or is holed. If in doubt fasten it all down with duct tape.
To test if this is the problem area use a hose pipe to pour lots of water over the windscreen whilst the trim cards are out.
Hope this helps.
Bill.

Bill,
I have the same problem described in the original question. During really hard rains on the drivers side (91 240 wagon) I get a small puddle of water. Fortunately the rubber mats catch it. It pools up just to the left of the brake pedal.
I looked at my car after reading your fix and could not figure out which piece you are talking about. Any way you could post a digital picture?
thanks - Buck
