Turn signals stop working when I turn lights on

Post by jd5077 »

1998 S90.....My 4 way flashers and turn signals work fine until I turn on either the marker lighs or headlights. With the lights on the dash light for the right turn signal stays on continuously no matter where the turn signal is at.Any ideas?

Sounds like you have a bad ground circuit for the lights. I would check all the grounding points on the body/frame to make sure they ate clean and tight and check the bulb sockets to make sure thay are not damaged.

I haven't seen one that bad before. Is the bulb holder allowing the bulb to move around?

That will happen with cheaper bulbs. The contacts are made out of softer metals and the heat of the bulb causes them to melt a bit.

I have found melted bulb solder due to local overheating as oxidized surfaces cause the contact resistance to increase.
Prevention: Use non-abrasive methods to clean the contacts (socket and bulb) and then coat lightly with "bulb grease"
Example of Precision: Measure with a Micrometer, mark it with Chalk, and then cut it with an Axe.
Disclaimer: We (very) seldom do that
