Car shutoff shortly after starting.

Post by rfreely »

I have a 2000 Volvo S70 2.4 Liter non-turbo.
What were the signs that your fuel pressure regulator need to be replaced.
Some days we go to start the car, we turn the key, it acts like it wants to start, then the engine cuts out very shortly after attempting to start. We then again turn the key, it acts like it wants to start, then the engine cuts out very shortly after attempting to start. Usually on the third time the car starts. Can anyone provide some assistance. :?:

Thanks

It may be a problem with your anti-theft system.
There's a chip in the keyhead that is read by an
antenna ring surrounding the ignition switch.
It's causes the same thing that you're describing
if someone attempts to start the car with a key
that turns, but doesn't have the right chip code.

Having more than one of the car's keys on the same ring can cause problems.
A dirty connection where the antenna ring plugs in can make this happen.
A bad antenna altogether will do the same thing, but it's a pretty simple
part, just a coil of wire, and the connector is a much more likely suspect.

Not sure, but I think the system has trouble codes that require a Volvo reader.

Or you could have some other problem... Gotta CEL? Any Codes?

I've actually had that problem lately. It happens after I drive the car for a 2 hour trip, park, go to start it up and it cuts out. The first time it took two attempts to get running. The second time I had to immediately rev the engine to keep her going. It sometimes happens at stop lights or stop signs...My mechanic thought maybe the idle control valve but I have no codes...
I have an oil leak in my rear cams so after I fix that i'll see if it still occurs...

In my 2000 V70 it was the antenna ring at the key. It's easy to replace. I wanna say that the OBDII code is 1670 but, you wont get a check engine light. The code will be stored but, no light. Get Auto Zone to check it for you.

On my car I just ordered the antenna ring and replaced it my self. No reprogramming needed. It's the little ring that goes arond the ignition key hole.

FYI, the local Volvo stealership says that fuel pump failures are rare on the 2000 S/V/C70s. So, it could be a fuel pump but the failure rate of the antenna ring is higher.
