2000 C70 oil usage

Post by gtrplayr1976 »

Hi folks, This is a continuation of another thread I posted trying to get some issues cleared up on my sons C70. It has 160k on it ,and SEEMS to be using a lot of oil. I found this information in a Volvo repair program I purchased (VADIS) . I'm just wondering your thoughts on this information ,and still trying to get some codes cleared. Most of the codes seem to be vacuum hose related from what I'm reading. Now I just need to locate them. I cleared one code by replacing a bad coil. Thanks for the help.

Ok, so, what's the question?

As the guide flows, it is considered normal for your son's car to use about 1 quart of oil every 1,200 miles. Is that what's going on?

I was just wondering how accurate this scale may be ? His car has seemed to be using a lot , but we never checked it against the mileage. That's what I would like to do now since it was just refilled. I think it also needs the PCV system cleaned.

Thanks

If you think it needs cleaned, just replace it.

Check the oil every 500 miles and see what's going on. As long as you don't let it run low you should be ok. Also, do not use cheap (not so cheap in price) oil filters. You OEM Mann filters. Other filters may cause harm to the motor.

Thanks. That's what we'll do. I think the last filter I used was Bosch cartridge. Is the PCV replaceable in this ? According to the post from Justin it requires a cleaning.

It's replaceable; the hoses and everything need to be replaced and some ports in the engine block cleaned.

Not a standard PCV "valve" like most cars have.

I doubt that your son's car is burning oil so much as leaking it somewhere. The spark plug cover up top usually fills with oil, and seals/hoses leak around the turbo. You may not ever see oil actually dripping on the ground, but it has no problem throwing it directly on the exhaust for you to inhale through the air vents.

Once you do the PCV system service, replace the oil cap seal on top as well. That will keep oil from pooling up there - those gaskets need to be replaced about every few months or so.

My car uses about 1 qt/5000 miles. Not bad at all for a car with 217,000 miles on it if you ask me - and it does still leak some. I honestly don't care anymore; every time I fix a leak, it decides it wants to leak somewhere else.

OK that's what we'll do. I'll see if I can find all the appropriate parts ,or just take it to a good mechanic if I can find one I can trust not to rip us off. It doesn't seem to be burning oil at all ,and It does have oil under the valve cover. I noticed that when I replaced a coil.

Wow, sounds like yours is doing great for that mileage. I need to get his in shape ,because he really needs to have it dependable.

Thanks Justin !
