Question # 2: Will this fix work for a bad angle gear or just for problems past angle gear? I ask this to be sure that removing the drive shaft will elliminate sound from bad angle gear and also stop any future damage to car.
Probably the best (and only) way to find out is to try it and see, especially since it was already removed once. Didn't the shop drive it after removing the shaft to see if the noise was gone? If not, why did they remove it?

The shop removed the drive shaft and replaced it with a new one because they thought the sound was coming from a bad drive shaft bearing. After replacing it I started to drive home and the sound was still there, they then did more investigation and came to the Angle Gear as the problem.

OK, then removing the driveshaft alone won't fix the problem. I've read that you can also remove the angle gear and connect the passenger side front axle directly to the transaxle. Normally the pass side axle connects to the transaxle through the angle gear. I have seen pictures of how to do this. However, I don't know much about the details. You might try searching on Volvospeed if you want to pursue that approach. Or try Erie Vovo for a used angle gear.

Long story and many dollars burnt as to how I got here. I have a 1998 V70 R AWD that was doing cracking and skipping noises when making slow speed turns either direction (i.e. u turns). I took drive shaft off and all noises went away. I bought new refurbished drive shaft and all noises came back. Tried rear differentials from junkyards but noises came back. My main concern now is that I've driven the car with the drive shaft down but this way when I make accelerations and turns (i.e. city lights with turns) the front wheels just skip and I lose traction. When I come down the mountains I don't trust the handling (the AWD seemed to stick and stabilize the car down to the ground). When it's rainy and I hydroplane, there is no comparison in the handling. I believe the car (or computer or ABS system???) or something must be designed to perform with the AWD system, that gets in the way of good handling when the AWD shaft is disconnected. But you state that your car handles well in the snow. I'm wondering why mine does not handle so well when I disconnect the drive shaft. Any ideas?

Just removed my drive shaft from my 98 V70R using this post-- thanks for the info. A tip that I found useful is to have the car in park to loosen or torque the cap screws, then put it into neutral so I could turn the shaft to loosen screws in pairs. This requires the wheels to be off the ground (jack stands or lift).

Hello everyone,
Im a mechanic on cape cod and im starting to give up on my girlfriends Volvo. We bought a 2000 volvo v70xc with 180k on it for a good price about a year ago. At first everything was great and then it started falling apart on us. It was doing all these weird things with loosing the speedometer and odometer and all lights would come on. I replaces a VSS and a left front abs speed sensor and turns out there was corrosion on the abs module. So that seemed to do the trick. Now that that is fixed I have this other problem. The Bevel gear out of nowhere started making noise. Its not extremly bad yet but it does seem to be getting worse. We are almost out of money and cannot fix this right away.
Ive been reading and alot and alot of you are saying the driveshaft can be removed which is what im thinking about doing but im worried that it wont stay in park and will roll away on my girlfriend. Is removing the driveshaft okay temporarily and will it cause any other problems.
Also I was wondering if draining the bevel gear box and putting in a higher or lower grade oil will help with the noise.
If anyone could advise me in the best possible direction i would appriciate it.

The AWD system isn't like a Jeep where it won't hold in park so no problems in that regard. The car will just act like a standard FWD once the prop shaft is out unless the bevel gear is really smoked. Changing the oil in the bevel gear can never hurt anything. I refilled mine with some Royal Purple GL4 / GL5 that I had left over from changing the oil in the manual transmission on my '94.

I can't say that it hurt anything or helped anything since the car didn't have a prop shaft when I bought it. Without the prop shaft it isn't making any weird noises.

I used this post to remove my 99 V70 rear drive shaft.

I have detached it from the front and the rear. I can't get it through the metal circle in the middle. Do I need to take a hammer to the ends of the part, to get the circle part where the 6 bolts were located, off?

I am so frustrated at the moment because I want to be done and get it off the jacks so my wife can use it, but I can't figure out how to pull the part through that darn circle in the center.

Any help would be appreciated!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If I'm understanding you, the 'metal circle in the middle' is the center bearing mount. You'll need to take off two bolts at the center bearing to free up the middle of the propshaft. The propshaft ends should pop loose with a hammer blow or two on the flange after the six bolts on either end are out.

After you remove the two bolts at the center bearing,
remove the 4 bolts for the crossmember and get it out
of the way. Then the driveshaft comes right out.

For those of you who removed the driveshaft, converting an AWD ---> FWD, I have a question re fuel mileage, for highway drive what is the gain in fuel mileage?

- AWD = ________ mpg
- FWD = ________ mpg

2005 XC90 2.5T 110K+
