More Questions - Horn Relocating, Amp, CAI

Post by aldend123 »

I was doing the Horn Relocation today http://volvospeed.com/Mods/hornrel.htm
I have no idea if it'll benifit me, but I <3 free mods! anyways, I don't seem to have that bracket as pictured, though looks like that is an S70 pictured (i have one also, 1998). I couldn't find any other good places to mount them, any one have any ideas? For now I just left the horns out, I don't use them anyway, and I just had my inspection done.

I have a K&N drop-in air filter with the stock airbox, which i noticed has a form of CAI, piped to the grill. Would I benifit at all from doing a Home Depot CAI, piping air from the air-dam near the fog light, into the bottom of the airbox?

I have the 10 speaker stereo ( i believe) with the SC816 deck, sounds pretty nice for a stock system. I was wondering though, are they easy or hard to blow out?

Also, would the amp from I believe the R models increase the quality much? Doe the 9xx decks from the C70 sound a lot nicer? Id go for an aftermarket deck but i'd just despise the stupid goofy multicolored rainbow look on my dash.

Anyone know where i can get the grill from the XC's? I have a black S70 and think one of those would look nice on it. And how much? Poor college kid here, so cheap is good :-) used is cool too, anyone got a rear-ended XC parting out? Anyone wanna trade me for my stock S70 grill? Anyone know how much something like this would go for at a junk yard?

With 85k and 8 years on my car, i heard replacing the spark plug wires and distributor cap/rotor is a good idea. However, as a 19 year old kid, I don't have a lot of extra fundage. Is there a way to test if they need to be replaced? Maybe like sticking a voltage meter to the end of each spark plug wire?

Since im playing 20 questions here, I might as well take the chance to plug another issue im having thats just driving me insane, I plan to get it diagnosed by a mechanic after the 4th. https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/chat/p ... php?t=7597
ive since jacked the car up and played around and poked all kinds of stuff in the front end, nothing notably strange, except the bushings seem to have a small amount of play (a arms) and i noticed both struts moved a little (equal on each side)... just kinda suprised me, but seemed normal?

Be very careful, building your own Cold Air Intake system. In many instances, people place air inlet below their front bumper. They get caught in a rain storam and unintentionally drive thru high water. Engine takes in water. Air compresses; Liquid does not. Cylinder Head bolts are pulled from block -- stripping the threads.

I am NOT a fan of K&N filters. Hold one up to bright sunlight (even one that has been oiled). Dirt does get past those filters. I am investigating these from AMSOIL.

Not sure if this helps any more, but if you lie on your back with your head under the front headlight (One nearest the battery) and look up, you should be able to find something to bolt the horns to.

Check out my little guide:

I had to make a bracket for my S70 to bolt the second horn onto (though the first hon bolted up as explained in the above link) as I could not find a place to bolt mine either. It was easy. I used a piece of metal used to install a garage door opener lying around. When I get a chance I'll take a picture to post.

Hey I'm getting on in years and do not know what that means. If it is some sort of new fangled text messaging thing can you interpret for my generation who think telephones only make telephone calls?

Ya it was almost supposed to be a sarcastic mockery of the "<3" term, guess i shoulda kept things simple huh? Anyways,

For now, I'll probably hold off on doing the home-made CAI. As for the horns, I'll just try harder to find some good places, or make a bracket.

How 'bout the stereo questions? Anyone have any words of wisdom on those?

Thanks for all the help guys. I put in rear rotors/pads (Brembo with Volvo pads), along with ebrake shoes and hardware, and was going to document it all, and post it in return for all the help but unfortuantly I was pressed on time, sorry. I'd like to document more of the work I'm doing if I can find the time though. Maybe you'll see some stuff from me soon.
