2002 S60 (Non-turbo) Charcoal Canister/J Hose Replacement

Post by tatonka12345 »

Found out today via smoke test that the charcoal canister and j hose on my 2002 S60 (non turbo) were the source of a constant P0442 code coming up. I have to pass emissions by next month (Illinois) or else I can't renew my plates. I don't have the wherewithal to get to the canister and J hose which is in a ridiculously tight space under the trunk area. The mechanic/garage (non-dealer that specializes in European cars) quoted me $720 for parts and labor while the dealership quoted me $805. Any pros or cons to having either one of them do it besides the obvious $85 difference? Thanks in advance.

Find another shop that can install parts for you and buy the parts online.

It does not have to be a volvo indie shop, just a place with a lift that can replace parts.

I had the same issue w/ my 2001 S60.

The whole rear axle assembly has to be dropped and lowered to gain access. I had a split hose, probably $4.00 worth of parts and almost $300.00 in labor to gain access and replace the hose.

It sucks but had to be done.

Thanks for any feedback... I checked around, but went ahead with the original shop. Instead of the $700 originally quoted, it only cost me $577 for labor and parts, which included the smoke test. SLK Autohaus in Orland Park

The Split hose, did it cause the vehicle to drive badly? I have a 2001 Volvo s60 and I have taken it to several different Mechanics, and the problem continues. The vehicle has mass power at times and very little at other times. there are also times when im driving and it reves like if the car was put into (N) but its still in drive. I feel it smells like gas, but no leaks have been found. Any Ideas what it may be caused by? :?:

The repair of the split hose doesn't seem like it has affected the performance of the vehicle, but I haven't driven it much because my wife uses this car for the most part. With regard to the other symptoms you're experiencing, you might be having an issue with your ETM. Go here (https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums ... 12&t=17252) and see if this might be your problem.

Hello, I don't know if dropping the entire rear suspension was needed. I have a 2002 V70 FWD non-turbo and I simply lowered the exhaust system by undoing two bolts at the muffler hanger and a thin metal "bridge" across the longitudinal hump (4 bolts total) and letting the system pivot down. Then I loosened, but did not remove the fastening bolts on the underside of the charcoal canister so I could move it a bit for added access. I cut off the clamping straps with a 1/4" wood chisel and replaced the "J" hose using common screw clamps. An easy pain of a job. Kira
