find some indy mechanic who can weld the hinge back onto the A frame
a good bodyshop or the dealer could also do it for more$

I can't figure out how to get to the part that needs to be welded as it appears to be inside door frame?

Here, this might help you....avoid the welding...too many wires in there and it all has to come apart to do the job...this is much easier and good success as long as the check strap isn't totally broken in two:

pardon my ignorance, as I am not a mechanic, but how would one hold the nut tightly enough to attach the bolt properly and tight enough once it was in place? thanks

This happened on my '97 850, and I had it welded at a Volvo indie shop for a little over $100.

Tape on the end of your finger to start with and then a spanner bent to fit in and hold the nut at the same time with you holding the other end. I've read many posts on the Brickboard saying this method worked. You can weld if you want, but expect to pay high dollars.
