removing radio without triggering code

I was going to remove the original head unit on my 98 XC but am afraid it will trigger the "code". Is there a way to avoid that problem? What triggers the need for the code input? Is it interuption of power for a certain amount of time?

Nope. If the radio loses power for any reason, it locks up.
You may already have it. Check for a radio code card in
the owner's manual folder or look on top of the radio.
Many owner's write it there to avoid losing it.

Even if you haven't got it, it's easy enough to get.

If you remove the battery it will also lock up. With older units the buttons can be sensitive so you can cause a 3 tries your out lock up. You will then be required to have your car ignition on so the unit is hot and powered on for 2 hours before it will allow you to try 3 more times with the code or take a 2 hour trip somewhere.

You can pull the radio out of the slot but the second you disconnect the power supply you will need the code
ONE SECOND is all it takes

For select boxes, checkboxes, and radio buttons, the event is fired immediately when the user makes a selection with the mouse, but for the other element types the event is deferred until the element loses focus.
