TD03-TD04-15G...exploring the posibilities

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

TD03-TD04-15G...exploring the posibilities

Post by ACk »

So while im getting ready to drop off the 4T65E, along with alot of bottom end cleaning and a few upgrades (if you will) , i removed the twins this evening, there was no initial issues with them as the car has 75k on the clock. for now i took some pix and a brief comparison of the compressor housings, side by side.
The exhaust manifolds as some already know have a rather smaller mounting area, if possible the center housing of the TD04 bolts to the TD03 Turbine housing then VOILA! we have a winner, BUT!! thats not the issue here, we are looking at wirewall clearance, downpipe design, catalytic lenght, and of course how it will perform on a stock ECU.
A few years back i had mated a garrett T3 off my Nissan 300zx with a T04E compressor housing. It worked well , however it was over boosting and causing boost creep! , not to mention the integral wastegate was only good for 7 psig, so i designed my own regulator from a 300 psi regulator valve and i got about 22 psi, and a steady 14psi on the fly.
I think thorughout the years of working on turbo cars and what not, i dont have a doubt that the T6 setup can produce well over 350WHP, but can the newly performance upgraded transmission be able to put it to the floor? I guess we shall find out. If i had extra $$$$$$$$ to play with i wouldnt worry and i would have 2 extra transmission and motors sitting as my backup , but i dont have this luxury YET ;) anyway.. here are some pix for ya'll as i will be dismantling the turbos for a fresh rebuild and have it balanced at Turbo Performance in Van Nuys ca. ;)

The bad news is that you will never see 350whp with the stock turbos. These turbos are just to small to produce that type of power.

The good news is that if you purchased the upgraded input shaft and larger drive chain, tuen your transmission should be able to handle that type of power. I had Dave at triple edge rebuild my transmission 2 years ago, and with over 20k miles on it, its still doing great.

Hi, yea i read some posts you had, sounds great, i love these cars... im trying to see if any of the Td03 parts interchange with the TD04's, so far no luck and there is not a TD03 with the same turbine housing which can take a larger compressor housing and wheel. I can weld a TD04 braket and slap on the TD04's but.... I think with a 3'' catalytic and straight through pipe and dual exhaust ( built by moi :) ) and a ECU tune and a nice intake i should be in the 300 hp range... so far im waiting to buy the tripple edge performance overhaul kit. stay tuned ...

Hey wanna sell one of your TDO3's? My #2 just took a major dump, pun not intended.

Not worth rebuilding the second one, recon the shaft is toast. First one there's some hope. Still need to figure out what hit them.

I suspect ingestion of some sort. No idea what, checkout my thread: https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums ... 11&t=48686

Where did you get the rebuild kit for your TD03's and how much did it cost?

I saw your thread, i think the thrust bearings did not receive proper amount of oil... possible do to the milage of the car, carbon deposits etc. etc. so from excessive hear and no oil the shaft started deforming , causing it off balance , thus throwing it all in. Thats my 2 cents .

as far as the TD03/TB02 parts, they interchange with some TD04's , i live in Los Angeles and been dealing with Turbo Performance in Van Nuys Ca. (Bob Sera) since 1995. He is a great person and knows ONLY turbo's , way before Turbonetics and all these guys came in. So call him up and talk to him.
