Need info on timing belt replacement XC90 T6

Post by jetskifast »

Time to replace timing belt on my 2004 XC90 T6.
Looking for any information people might have on replacing time belt on T6. Links, or any tips you might have from doing job.
Will also be replacing water pump, thermostat and all pulleys.
Do I need to use puller to get off vibration damper?
Do any seals need to be replaced?
Power steering and coolant tank need to be removed?
Thanks for any help you might have.

No puller needed. Seals for cams makes this a much different job as variable valve timing (VVT) units coming off cams requires special tools to re-install to avoid damage or at the least check engine light.
P/S and Coolant tanks need to be set on top of engine. The biggest issue you will have is the coolant line on timing cover. the nipple will need to be repalced. They get brittle with age and they are not easy to unlatch so count on it breaking. once it snaps and is no longer down in the recess in t cover you will see exactly how to unlatch. Even when it unlatches as it should the line can break due to brittleness.
You do know the t-stat is behind timing cover?

Hard to find good information on Volvo T6 timing belt replacement.
Looks like straight forward job, but as I never done timing belt change on T6 would enjoy tips for those who have replaced T6 timing belt.

I have done several. The nipple is the ugly part. Removing the thermostat first and putting it in last will help access.
Use paint markings. The volvo marks on gears are not perfectly lined up and you'll wonder when you go back together whether it should be off a little left or off a little right when it came apart. Paint marking will eliminate that worry.

jimmy57, access looks real tight. I know have to remove passenger tire for crank and vibration damper access.
Any lines have to come off coolant tank and Power steering box to set up on motor?
Anything else have to be relocated for access?

The hose from coolant tank to thermostat housing has to be disconnected but the hoses to PS res are long enough.
The box on the control units gives a little more room.
The control units need a special tool to remove or a lot of patience and two long skinny screwdrivers to remove. You can take the box off by depressing the clips with the control units still in place.
