crumbling wires-Nubie

I tried searching expecting a lot, but came up with nothing. I probably don't yet know how to use it correctly.
The wires to the fuel injectors have visibly crumbling insulation. I think it is the ground circuit. I believe I have seen something like this on Volvos before. Should I try to get into it, or will I open up an endless trap?
What is the reason for this problem? The car is a 1987 740 GL. Thanks for any help and/or enlightenment. Dan

He will give you great advice and get you a new or used harness. Most of the Volvo 240's wire harness will go bad due to excess heat and so on.

I have a 86 740 turbo. I bought it for 1/3 of the blue book value because, like yours, the insulation on the wires, especially the injector wires, would crumble off if you just touch them. I went to the junkyard and bought new wires with the injector plug on them and spliced them in. I also had to replace a half dozen other wires.
One of the reasons I got the car so cheap is because her mechanic told her it would cost $500 for a complete new wire harness and another $500 to install it. Out of maybe 100 wires, only 10 needed to be replaced. ll the rest were fine.
This was a common problem with only a few wires in that model year - at the junkyard I saw a few other cars with the same problem. But the injector plug stayed the same so get newer wires and splice them in - no problem!
