Need advice on ETM replacement
Need advice on ETM replacement
I have a 2002 V70 with 104,000 miles that has lately been exhibiting the symptoms of ETM failure -- specifically surging and heistating at low RPMs, rough idling, once conking out entirely. The check engine light has come on twice (once, oddly, the gas tank was nearly empty and when i refilled it, the light went off). It has been to the shop four times and had the MAF sensor replaced and the PCV Oil Trap replaced (at a cost of ca. $1,000), but the problem has not been solved. I am working with a mechanic who is not a Volvo specialist but has nevertheless been determined to identify what's wrong. He took the car to a Volvo specialist, who recommended the ETM replacement, at a cost of $1K. He also contacted the local dealer, who said he would have to perform a diagnostic to see if my car qualified for the ETM extended warranty program, but the chances were slim. It doesn't appear to be throwing the right codes at this point. Can anyone advise me as the right next move? I'm already $1K in, would rather not spend another grand. Thanks!

What colour is the sticker on the ETM? If I have my facts right (which may or may not be the case
) white sticker is the original and may well be the problem, yellow sticker is new model and less likely to cause problems. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong. Almostartic has my vote on the fuel filter and pump.

Yellows fail as well. They just indicate it was replaced with a new ETM from the dealer. Many people have had yellows needing replacing on here. I would try fuel filter first It is actually a 10 minute job for a non mechanic like me. It is often neglected from the maintenance unlike oil and oil filter. I found on Scangauge there are xgauge functions you can program that give you TPS and MAFvalues in real time do you can see how they react when you have constant throttle pressure.
