2004 v70 Rear wiper 'freezing'

Post by ianners »

My rear wiper 'froze' at the '10 o'clock' angle (for the second time) this week. Last time it restarted itself a week later (!)- this time I moved it on manually this morning with the wiper switched on, and after a couple of degrees turning it completed the cycle by itself but then remained in the park position even though switched on.
Any suggestions?
Been a Volvo owner (two 740 estates to 200K miles pre this car) since '85. Love the power and economy of this one, tho upgrade to the next model looms with the approach of 200k again. (Or should I get a low mileage 2007 D5 this shape?)
Thanks all,
Ianners

Have you tried opening the tailgate to see if wiper motor started? If it is the harness wires to tailgate broken often gently raising tgate will make them work. If it is bad motor then banging on tgate will often make it work again temporarily.

The harness through the hinges easily could be the problem. My rear wiper quit working last week, I found the problem to be broken wires at the left hinge (4 wires broken).
For quick diagnosis you could try squirting WD-40 around the shaft to see if corrosion and binding up is the problem.

If you have broken wires in the left hinge this tread will help.

If you diagnose the problem I'd love to hear the solution. My rear wiper 2001 V70 T5 is doing much the same. The problem started when I lost a ball joint on the passenger side, the wiper came on then began to fail shortly afterward. At the time I thought it was related to the damage caused by the tire hitting the inside of the fender well.

Thanks all. I tried your suggestion about raising the tailgate/ wiggling the LHS wires behind the hinge cover, but no joy. I realise I misled you by saying the wiper remained in 'Park' - actually it sticks at the extreme left position ('9 o'clock') but can be induced to restart by moving it past '10 o'clock'. It will park on the right side if switched off, but at '9-10 o'clock' if left on. It therefore looks as if I have an issue on the wiper motor at that portion of the cycle and will have to uncover that mechanism. Comments?

The gear in the casing can be worn out as shown in this picture.

Open the case to assess its state.

The following link is showing many pictures of the inside (near the end). This is from Club Volvo Quebec and I guest you can capture the essential.
