V40 oil leak...

Post by jefe »

Wondering if V40's have common oil leak spots. My volvo is a 2001, about 95k miles on it.

Since my Honda leaks oil, I've gotten in the habit of checking levels often, but I've never noticed a drastic level change in oil on the Volvo...but there is definitely something going on...I see a lot of drips forming on the underside of the car, mainly centered around the oil pan and the tranny case and some of the pipes around that area....and what's happening during highway driving, this oil is getting blown backwards down the under carriage and collecting road dirt and making a mess.

I really need to clean it all up down there because right now it's too hard to tell where it might be coming from....but thought I would ask what the common culprits are.

Thanks.

It's coming from the turbo oil drain pipe. There's an o-ring where the drain pipe enters the block. Really dumb design.

hard for me to tell where that is on the block too....is that the little pipe that connects just above the oil pan near the oil pan bolt?

Pretty simple install?

I'll answer this one myself. Bought the gasket kit for $2.50 and no, it was not a simple install. The instructions that came with the gasket kit make it seem very easy and that the pipe is very accessible....with my 01 V40, the pipe is not very accessible and I ended up having to disconnect the cat at either side of the exhaust pipes to move it out of the way in order to reach the torx bolts at the upper end of the turbo pipe. You have to remove the heat shield also that covers the cat on the top side of the engine.

It's a T-30 that fits the bolts on the upper part of the drain pipe and one of the torx bolts (there's 2) is extremely difficult to access....but it is doable.

I'm not sure exactly how long it took me but in about 7 hours, I was able to replace these gaskets, do an ATF drain and fill, and fix the shift knob button.

Hope this helps someone in the future.
