Transmission Fluid change 98 V70

Post by rmmagow »

So I put my car up on ramps, took out the 24MM tranny drain plug (after having to run out to AutoZone to buy a wrench this big). I measured about 3.5 Qts on the drain. This sort of sounds ok. I replaced the 3.5 qt with 3.5 qt PEAK atf dexIII fluid and all shifts fine. The fluid I drained out was brownish but no smell, the drain plug (magnetic??) was very clean, no fuzz. I basically figure I'll do another 3.5 qt change in a couple of weeks when my regular oil change is due then maybe one more at summer's end. The tranny has never done anything strange so I am just going to stick with regular atf for now with drain and fills maybe every 2nd or third oil change. PEAK atf is only about 3.25 a qt through Amazon.
This all sound OK? I've put nearly 20K miles on the car since I bought it and am impressed with the lack of serious issues and the way the car stays fixed after fixing it. I am going after a 98 S70, NA, 140000 miles, asking price is $3100.00, probably gettable at 2800 cash. This is the same guy I got this one from. He seems to be pretty good with the Volvos.

Sounds like a great plan. No need for expensive fluid as long as you take care of it.

The transmission will thank you by living well past 200K like mine and many others with proper maintenance have done.

You hear about people blowing up the 4-speeds at 100-150K miles and I suspect it's because they've NEVER changed the fluid.

I would do them all now (within a few days of each other)
that way you will know when the fluid is thoroughly clean
Waiting that long in between drain and fills you can never know.....

I have a 98 V70 XC and a transmission fluid change smoothed out the shifts.

Go to this link half way down the page and click on the .PDF.

http://www.ipdusa.com/products/4808/107 ... h-hose-kit

With some 1/2 inch hose you can flush the entire system in one shot. As a quart or 2 gets pumped out of the transmission just add a quart or 2. When you start seeing clean fluid come out you know you are done. Follow the instructions on the PDF. I did it on my S70 at 100,000 and shifts great now. I bought a case (12 quarts) of transmission fluid from Sam's Club for $22.

IPD is comfortable with the Trans Flush.

The 12 quarts for $22 is a steal :!: As for the Kit it is generic so it works for the 98 and older cars with the Metal Clamp and Newer Green Quick Release. The Metal Clamp can be reused with a zip tie. Just O-Rings and/or Green Clip and the Hose can be purchased at .50 cent to less than a dollar per foot at Lowe's.

I want to use O'Reilly's Dexron VI ATF in my 98 V70 XC in order to avoid buying separate ATF bottles for different vehicles. Dex VI is compatible with older Dex IIE/III series that is specified in the owner's manual. What do you guys think?

Using this DIY guide www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=8767 I did an ATF drain and fill on my 1998 V70 XC. It was pretty easy to do. I took the plunge with O'Reilly brand Dexron VI drove it around the lot while changing through all gear selections. Will update if there are any problems or improvements. I'm not expecting anything to change with the auto trans, but you never know until you drive around for a bit.

I ended up doing 4 drain and fills on my 98. PEAK dexIII atf fluid. Still shifts fine. In October I am going to do a mobil-1 ATF using the plastic hose method. This change will stay in there for at least two years assuming the car lasts that long. I did the Peak thing first because it was super cheap and I thought running a good load of new fluid before going the expensive Mobil-1 might be a good idea. Most likely too anal but I do like my old beast. Looks like I will put in a new propshaft in the fall as the car is holding up with nothing more than some evap/vacuum cels and a slightly flaky ABS computer.
