850 voltage regulator
850 voltage regulator
I need a voltage regulator for my 1994 850 T but I see two types being offered, one by Bosch 1197311520 and one by Huco 1197311234. Are they interchangeable or were there two different types of alternators/regulators fitted to these cars?

What kind of alternator is in your car right now?
The majority of them use a Bosch alternator, but some were equipped with some Nippondenso-named thing. If you've got the Bosch, then you need the Bosch voltage regulator.

I bought one of these $12 VR off ebay for my Mercedes (same alternator as 850). Holds steady 13.9-14.1v at all RPMs and electric loads. Plan to use the same thing on the 850.

I broke down in my 240, it was an alternator brush box issue. Bosch OE. The electricians place that my break down took me to fitted a HUCO replacement . It has been fine since, but it did not fit! They had to saw off a projecting bit of plastic to 'make' it go fully home.
Not sure if this would be an issue on yours, but thought it worthy of a 'mench'.

That mechanic is an idiot. The VR should pop right in if you compress the brushes. Without compressing the brushes it becomes a huge chore.Paul240480 wrote:I broke down in my 240, it was an alternator brush box issue. Bosch OE. The 240 and 850 use different shape VR. 240 along with most 80s Bosch alterators looks like this.

The important points about a VR is the shape and AMP rating. The 850 has a 100a alternator with the brushes sticking away of the solid state. Whether or not a vendor decided its specifically for your car and model year is pretty much irrelevant.

Thanks, at least it worked... I remember him scratching his head and holding the two VR's to compare. It was me that saw the difference and I said so. He chose to saw it, as you say if he'd simply held the brushes in it may well have slotted right in!
