Exhast Manifold Advice

Post by g-volvo »

Hi Folks:
I have 1996 850 non turbo, manual trans with SAS (Engine B5254FS). The flex pipe is leaking and I'm looking to purchase a replacement manifold kit. I'm having a hard time finding one that does not have EGR hookup.

1) Can I use an EGR manifold on an SAS engine?
2) Does anyone have any experience with the the manifold supplied by FCP Groton? Good? bad? ugly?
3) any suggestions on where to purchase would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
G.

The EGR is no big deal at all, just put a threaded plug in the hole and forget about it. The SAS, on the other hand needs to have its own bung (unless you do the SAS delete modification to the ECU which does work).

I was very happy with the OBX Racing header that I bought for my son's '96 non turbo. He did have EGR but no SAS and the EGR line was a bear to get formed around to fit the new header on the OBX product.

OBX tends to cater to the Ricers and they have very little listed on the web page for Volvo. A call to them might get you exactly what you need. The OBX was all stainless steel and the welding was very good. The great news was that it cost less than the Chinese imports on eBay. It has been a couple of years ago but the OBX header was in the low $100.00 range - under $150.00 with freight as I recall.

I can't comment on the FCP part as I have never used it. Stuff from FCP tends to fit most of the time.

1+,

Some people here use "OBX" brand and seem happy.

I use OEM Volvo because I figure it lasted me 11y/110K miles, because I hope to keep this car for another 8-10 yr (to get my kids through high school). Anyway I bit the bullet and used Volvo OEM.

Here is the DIY, a bit challenging but feasible:

PS: If you decide to go with OBX, use the gaskets from dealer only!

I'm cheap! I found a local muffler shop that cut off and rewelded a new flex pipe for $130. I got a 1 year warranty, that was last December;9k miles, later still ok.

You might check Erie Vo-Vo. They sell used R manifolds for $200 on ebay. If that doesn't fit your car, they probably have something that does. Tell them you don't want it painted, or it will be.

If you are facing this again soon on another car then you might want to note the details in Lee's post, he got a whole new manifold for the same cost.

Thanks erik 11, I appreciate the input. I in fact,do have a flex pipe leaking which I intend to take to the muffler shop tomorrow. I do not have the time or ambition to replace the manifold,I also do not want to pay to have it replaced. Thanks again.

On the later models that had the SAS inject air into the exhaust manifold instead of the head used the same port on the exhaust manifold as the EGR equipped cars right?

Anyway, my DNA Motoring manifold is holding up well:
