Gearbox Problems AISIN 55-51SW

Post by WellingtonX »

Guys

My poor running XC90 is turning out to be a gearbox issue which seems to be getting worse. Gearbox hesitates badly between first and second, you feel the change up, hear the box spinning up but that's all and then it grabs 2nd with a hell of thud. There's also hesitation between 3rd and 4th as well.

I have two questions. Firstly do these symptoms match any known problems. I have read about solenoids but I can't get a match on symptoms. Secondly, I have an opportunity to purchase a second hand gearbox, apparently low mileage off a C-30. Although it is an AISIN 55-51SN box there two - four digit numbers on the plate that don't match mine. My numbers are 3071 and underneath this 3881. The changeover unit has the numbers 3125 and 9279 and I am thinking that this is a different variant of the 55-51SN. Can anyone advise me if these two gearboxes are interchangeable.

Many thanks

Have you try changing out the Fluid to see if it improves?

Was the C30 AWD? If not it won't suit. You require a gearbox with another output for AWD transfer case.

To follow up on the post about your gearbox I'd be rather keen for a TOTAL fluid drain & refill (around 12 litres).

After a fluid counter reset and drive cycle done with Vida diagnostic you would hope for some better results.

The solenoids are problematic on these and the Rostra solenoids seem to be the best aftermarket solution but it requires dropping the 'box to fit them so around 10 hrs labour plus around $250 for solenoids.

Guys
Many thanks for the posts. C30 box turned out to be not an AWD like our XC90 but it was a long shot anyway.
First stage of the 'get well' plan is to have the box completely flushed and see if there is improvement.
Cheers

I saw that transmission and engine advertised and it would be great if the seller would exclude XC90 from the ad.
Would be great combo for a project car.
