89 240 dl wagon external fuel pump/filter replacement

Post by spacemanspiff1386 »

For the past month my wagon has only been starting when it wants to. It all began when it wouldn't start up and run but the starter was engaging and cranking nice and strong. Having owned older Vo's in the past I Immediately went to the Fuel Pump relay, ordered it for 15$, installed it in 5 minutes and it started right up as strong as ever. Drove around running several errands, turning it off and starting several times with no problems. Next day it would not start, towed to mechanic a few days later testing the starter every so often with no luck over the few days. Mechanic calls a couple days later saying we tested it cold tested it hot it has started right up at least a dozen times every time. SWEET!!! I drive about 15 miles a majority on the Fwy cruisin at about 65 to meet a friend and the performance was perfect no stalling no decrease in acceleration or power, no sputtering or weird noises. l spend the night there, go to leave the next day and it doesn't start COOL! At least I'm outside of the 7 miles triple A covers on a free tow. I make it down there a couple days later to get it towed back to the mechanic test it before calling AAA and boom starts right up, I drive it back the 15 miles and drop it off at my mechanic to avoid paying for a tow. Finally it acted up for the mechanic they were able to diagnose the Crank shaft Position sensor? Also informing me the externally mounted fuel pump was acting up I, I know there are 2 fuel pumps on this model and this is the cheaper/easier of the two. Estimate for both was about 790$ which is too steep for me right now. I gave him the green light on the Sensor which I've heard is located behind the fly wheel which seems labor intensive and hes charging me about $250 for parts and labor on that. I've read that the external fuel pump is located under the passenger seat and relatively easy to access and I found the part new for under 100$. Does Anyone have info on replacing the externally mounted fuel pump. Is it an easy fix? How difficult is it to depressurize the fuel line? Im a visual learner so pictures/images are worth their weight in gold to me
