new serp tensioner help

Post by louty »

New style, v70. yes I have done volvo serpentine belt replacements before. However, in replacing the timing belt and serp belt I ordered all the tensioners etc On the serpentine blet, the 2000, use a different routing then early ones and the tensioner
has been superseeded to a new style. the tensioner no longer uses the 14mm bolt on pulley to take up tension for belt replacenment. It now uses a 60 torque, not on the pulley but on the body.
the issue Im having, is that when you get a toque in the hole, and go to slack the tension, the socket is in the way and makes it all a tight fight, I have not been able to get the stinking belt on

so, not trying to be rude, if you have a suggestion for the early one wiht a bolt not a torque, the suggestion wont help.
and from what I have read, many of those out there wilth the bolt are getting usperseeded to this style so there must be a trick

dont know how to post pics, but here is a link to the new tensioner style anda showing the different thean earlier cars routing

https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums ... &mode=view

if you look at the pic, you will see the big 60torx that has to pivot right, when it pivot right, enough to release tension, it then hits the belt, bending the belt and putting it under tension

ipd, etc, do not sell a serp tool for this style tensioner, well at least not on line

Pop the cap off the nut and use your wrench on the idler pulley bolt like you have been doing.

its a torx undeer the cap as well and a torx socket wont fit between it and the frame of car and get a breaker bar or ratchet on it. a allen type torx ( L shape) is also too big to get in between the frame adn itself.
poppiing the cap is is prob the route I will have to take tomorrow, just need to figure out how
maybe I can bust the torq bit out of the socket, and get a wrench on it and a pipe

If you get the proper torx key, then you are OK.

You need to read this DIY, the key thing is to use an Allen key (or something similar) to lock the tensioner 1st:

FYI, a few typos in your post (it was difficult to read your posts), there is a difference between "torque" and "torx".

ok
so the advice was good, but did not work. I tried for an hour. turning the tensioner to every position I could and I could not find a locking hole to throw a pin. I tired all my torxs again, and they all get in the way. I tried prying wiht a scredriver to get the belt over the p/s pump, or over the crank, nope.plus I dont like doing that, in case of putting a small cut in a belt casuing premature failure. i checked the new one to the old, same size...so whats new whats different, well the new superseeded tensioner
finally I pulled off the new tensioner, the OEM dealer supplied in a pretty box with the blue label tensioner.
there is no locking hole to put a pin, nada, nothing. and this is a oem part, direct from dealer
ok, so off to the auto parts stores, no one, napa, autozone, carquest, knects, has a torx socket, or a torx type allen shorter than what I have
so I cant put a torx on the pulley itself, ( yes its a torx not a bolt) cant get between pulley and frame
cant twist the tensioner and leave a torx and socket there, as it then binds the new belt
and going on the web, everybody that sells tools, for this, volvo in particular, lists the one to grab the nut/bolt. there is no bolt/nut
getting ready to put the old one back on ( tensioner) and grab the bolt on the pulley, like the good old days
surely there is a trick to this that I am just not getting
this is driving me nuts
ok
where are all you guys that do this for a living, what am I doing wrong
or am I the lucky first wiht this new superseeded volvo tensioner
again here is a

What happened to the old tensioner?

For my '99 V70 and for a XC70 '02 I sold I refurbished my older type by finding a seller in eBay USA that was selling a pulley only which was the same outer diameter. I recall emailing the seller for dimensions. It was a Gates brand pulley. I had to shave 1mm from each face side with an orbital sander; took 2 minutes and I had a reliable solution. Only problem is that I can't reuse the plastic cap. Using the 14mm bolt is so easy.

If you still have the old one look into it as you can always put the new one back on eBay for an indie shop that has the factory tool.

I know this isn't any help to your situation, but what kind of symptoms did you have before you decided to replace the tensioner? I'm getting a whining noise that increases with RPMs... a few months ago I noticed a light rattle from the serp tensioner, juts wondering if yours progressed in the same way mine is or if my problems are internal on my engine.

no symptoms, just age etc.
sons car, 205k miles, no record of it being changed. doing timing belt and all those rollers and tensioners, waterpump, thermostat, plugs, front pads. fuel and air filters, cleaned the maf, new stabalizer link, all that junk, all that stuff is done, just trying to get this stinking belt back on
figured Id put a new tensioner on with the belt, cause of age and miles, he got all the parts, and they are all volvo dealer supplied parts, his choice.
he does not live near. he can kind of twist wrenches, but he works like 60+ hours a week plus is in the nat gaurd,( disabled form Iraq and a mine) and has a family, so he has like zero time
like so busy, if it took 30 seconds to poop, he does not have time to fart
so im trying to help him out here, but this belt tensioner is killing me
trying to help him out, cause he is limited on income even though he works tons of hours ( work does not equal money)
ive done many before, on 850's, early s70's, honda's, chevy's, fords
Ive owned and worked on volvos since the 544's
this one,
i just dont get it
