I am experiencing a cold start issue which I first noticed late last winter and thought I might get help here. The car is 2005 Volvo V70. The engine is a B5244S6 - 2.4 Liter - nonturbo.
The problem went away in the hot weather. It seems to have reappeared the last few days due to colder (high 40's) overnight temperatures. The problem occurs when the engine is first started from cold overnight. The engine appears to run very lean - surging RPM and, after I put car into drive gear, I must use throttle to keep it going. This lasts for only a minute or so after which the engine proceeds to run normally. I cannot reproduce the issue until the next morning. The colder it is overnight, the longer the problem lasts on the cold start in the morning. If one allows the engine to warm up without putting it in gear, it will run with RPM surging between about 800 and 1700 RPM for about a minute or so and is then fine. No stored or pending codes are set. I cannot reproduce the problem unless the car has sat overnight.
I have checked the temp sensor and it is O.K.. I do not think this engine has pulse air. I did check for vacuum leaks but the issue goes away very quickly - one minute or so.
I connected my Actron CP9180 scan tool (can't afford VIDA test equipment) and recorded data frames from startup. The scan tool takes a snapshot about every seven seconds. Here is the data I get - the first frame is just before I start the engine with RPM 0:

Comparing the "cold start" data to the "running normally" data, it looks to me like the MAF sensor readings are very high for the engine RPM in the "cold start" data. I am not familiar with this type MAF - ceramic coated hot wire. Usually the MAF signal is directly proportional to the engine RPM - higher RPM gives higher MAF signal and the MAF functions right from startup. The MAF signal is very large at cold startup and seems to get lower, more inline with the spec, as the engine runs. Perhaps the MAF is warming up? The "running normally" scan tool data shows the MAF signal at what I get no matter when I look for that engine RPM after the cold startup issue subsides.
Perhaps the high MAF sensor reading is causing my cold start issue or is this normal behavior for this MAF sensor of this type?
Maybe I am missing something?
Any suggestions greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Jxkeefe

Denso makes the MAF for this model. Have you tried to clean it. It can be removed by the screws on top.
Buy MAF cleaner and spray some on the end where is the thermistor. Normally one side is dirtier. Also look down the tube and spray some inside. Components who measure air flow are located down the tube. Let it dry and reinstall. Some use isopropyl alcohol. Do not use harsh solution as brake cleaner.
After it would be a good idea to reset adaptatives. Some call it battery reset. Turn off everything in the car and wait 5 minutes. Then undo the negative lead at the battery. Touch the disconnected lead to the positive post for more than 5 seconds. Turn the ignition to position II and reconnect the negative lead. This will initiate a relearn sequence of car computers.
Try it and let us know of result.

That is a dual CVVT low emissions engine. The MAF signal is greater during the first 30 seconds as the cam phasing is altered for catalyst warm up and reduced hydrocarbons. The normal performance of engines with that emissions strategy is to run a bit rough and labored and it is using a lot more air. The phasing of the camshafts effectively makes the engine push more air to dilute hydrocarbons in exhaust. The MAF rate is not what I see that is bothersome. I see how low the voltage is initially. Do you have a battery charger? I suspect a weak battery. If the voltage drops during cranking from a weak battery, the ECM can dump fuel trim tables from the adjusted fuel mixture that occurs when it runs at normal engine temperature. There is also a memorized throttle opening percentage for idle regulation.
CHarge the battery overnight and start it the next morning and see if the engine runs better. You can remove the battery charger before you start it so you can crank it and drive away immediately if the initial performance is what it should be.
If I have the battery disconnected on a car with 75000 miles or more and I connect battery and start car they runs rough and often stall and have to be re-started a couple of times.

DGM: I will try cleaning the MAF next week. Out of town currently.
jimmy57 : You may be looking at the first frame when you indicate low batt voltage as an issue. That frame is just before I started the engine. You can see the engine RPM is 0. The next frame is just after engine start and the VPWR is 13.9V.
The MAF signal is very large for the engine RPM, manifold pressure and load well after 30 sec of engine running as the data shows. The engine starts in frame #3. in frame #8, the MAF is 25.61, MAP is 74 (throttle open), and ST Fuel trim is -16.1 (subtracting fuel engine running too rich) yet engine acts like it is running too lean - no power and no response to WO throttle. The fuel trim comes from the O2 sensor since the engine is in closed loop. The large MAF sensor signal suggests a large fuel flow to mix with the large amount of air passing into the engine yet the O2 sensor indicates to cut back n fuel per fuel trim indication. Perhaps the MAF signal is way too high causing more fueling than the air being drawn into the engine requires and thus the large leaning fuel trim. Once the MAF settles down, all is well with fuel trim as the second set of data indicates. When I had WO throttle in frame #5, the calc load was 98% - a bit high - and fuel trim was 0 but engine not in closed loop so no fuel trim expected.
mbreed: Regarding water in the fuel rail, I just swapped the fuel pressure sensor for code P0190. That is why you see MIL ON in module $10 in the first set of scan data. The check engine lite went off when I started the engine. Thus $18 doesn't see the MIL ON. This was before I cleared the code with the scan tool. The fuel pressure sensor is on the end of the fuel rail and when it is removed, all the fuel and/or whatever drains. Problem was still there the next morning.

Cleaned MAF sensor with CRC MAF cleaner. No improvement.
The MAF sensor seems to consist of what looks like a thermistor mounted in the air stream. I did not see any fine wires. I am not sure if this is a newer design since all MAF sensors I have seen had the fine wires.
Ordered new MAF sensor.
Will post results of using new MAF sensor as soon as it arrives.
Thanks all for your help and suggestions.
