I'm feeling your pain my brother. I don't get the plume of smoke like its a spark problem, but this weekend I'm going to hook up my timing light and get my daughter to crank it over to see if it is getting spark right away or if it suddenly kicks in and then starts. I changed my fuel filter last night, no change, but i also think new rotor, cap and wires can't hurt. If you do alot of intown driving, I won't be too bummed about 17-18. As I drive mine more and extend my driving envelope, go faster, my mileage drops, but its right there with you, and mines not AWD. I would think if you have a misfiring cylinder, you'd know it without any doubt. I can't beleive my 98 still has a rotor-cap setup and thats where I would look first if I had a problem like yours. Be sure to get a factory replacement and not a Sam's Best or equivelet, its worth on these models. Good luck.

So my 1994 850 turbo with 190 000kms on it is having similar issues... It usually takes about 4 seconds of cranking before firing up no matter whether the engine is hot or not. Anyone figure out their problem.. Cam Position sensor... Check valve (is it in the fuel pump? and can it be replaced without a new fuel pump?) MO-T5 did you figure out your problem? Thanks
