Oil leak dripping
Oil leak dripping
It just happened today, I noticed but I can't tell, it looks like it is leaking behind or at camshaft sensor. It almost drips as though a hose was busted. Can someone tell me if it's a seal? The car runs great, no smoke and has 170k miles. It is a 98 Volvo glt 2.4. I noticed that one of the torx bolts to the cam sensor was really loose. I tightened it but have not ran the car to see if it leaks because as soon as I turn it on it begins to seep oil from behind that area.

Agreed, sure sounds like a rear cam seal.

Instructions on how to change the seal are here:

The rear cam shaft seal cost me $3.99 (at FCP Groton) for my 850 turbo. Installation is very easy. It is a bit tricky to get the old one out, also be careful when putting the new one in, it has to sit flush and straight or it will leak again.

New to Volvo, already liking it. Hoping to keep it in good shape, not like the previous Benz 190e

For REAR Cam seals, the updated version is here using SKF 11809 ($6/each):

PS: Avoid Elring cam seals.

Good to know not to use the Elring one, I just installed it yesterday.
At least it only takes 30, once it leaks it will be a quick routine. How come FCP does not sell those? Would have preferred it.

I strongly suggest the VOLVO OEM seals. Our S70 had after market seals and they only lasted about 2-1/2 years.

I'll second the Volvo seals. Don't know why they last longer, but ours need changing after 3 years. They were not Volvo brand.
Will go back with Volvo ones next time.

While I agree that we should use Volvo seal (Rear cam seal is $17/each), however SKF is a major supplier for Volvo.
I installed the SKF seal as mentioned above for $6.50/each.
Bone dry, zero leaks.
I highly recommend using SKF seals, you get OEM stuff at much cheaper prices.
