Loss of oil and power

Post by 855 moneypit »

First off, the motor has 310k miles and is a touch tired but still has plenty of pep. However I am now experiencing a substantial loss/lag in power delivery when I get into boost. The motor is revving and willing but there's no kick at times. Other times it will take its time then start to pull. I get around town and the freeway just fine. I have been very careful about getting into boost.

I checked the hoses and the top inter-cooler hose is quite soft. Due for replacement obviously. I then checked around the turbo to find this

Looks like a nice sized rip on the coupler. Major cause of power loss?

I have also been losing more oil than usual. In my search for a source I notice oil on the passenger side cv boot by the timing cover. I pulled the cover and noticed oil/grime on the lower corner.

I looked around some but didn't see any source of oil coming from the front cam seals. Anywhere else I should be looking for an external leak in that area?

The only way to pin down the source of the leak is to clean off what's there (Gunk Foamy works pretty well, after dry, some brake cleaner will get suspect areas like new, so oil can be spotted...you can buy Leak Detector at Parts Stores, but you may need a UV light to use it...so read the label...visual should be good enough...just drive it a few days after you clean it. I'd leave the belt cover off to simplify spotting the source, but only for ths short timer, and no off-roading, monsoons, etc...

when you say a loss in boost, do you know how much boost its making ? If its a auto trans it could be slipping causing the feeling of loss of power.

Transmission isn't slipping. Holds speed fine going up hill. That was my first thought though. The louder, more pronounced WHOOOOSH I noticed when getting into it leads me to that nice little rip in the coupler. Going to get dirty this weekend or next replacing the hoses.

Getting a rotation, alignment and oil change this week. While they have the wheel off I'll take a peek at the lower portion of the timing components. The only place it's grimy is there at the bottom corner.

I also noticed black ( not oil ) residue on the waterpump just inboard of the pulley. Any ideas on that?

If your hearing a louder whoosh then yeah prob a torn hose somewhere, id say the oil leak is coming from the front cam seals.

Yeah, that'll it. If that's shot, it's a good idea to replace all five of the hoses related to the intercooler.

Inspect your oil thermostat and related hoses. It's behind the passenger wheel, just in front of the eninge mount and under the serp belt.

Thanks vj, I'll have them check it out when I take it in for oil change and rotation. Be easier with the car in the air.

If this is a cracked hose from a turbo....that's why you have a loss of power.

That there is a nasty little gash. Aside from teh dealer the only other brand I can find is URO and I'm not too fond of their goodies.
