How do I take off the front speaker grilles in my 95' 850 turbo? I want to install some new speakers, and I want to see what i have in there now w/o breaking something... A quick answer would be really appreciated.
Thanks
Erik

Make sure the ohms are correct. Our Volvo's are weird when it comes to that.

how do I make sure i dont screw up the ohms? Ive seen wiring diagrams etc... but Im not really grasping what I need to look after. please excuse my ignorance on this topic. Is there a spec. that tells me that a certain product will work or not? If it matters, Im looking at the Pioneer DEH - P4800MP head unit and 5.25" Polk audio db 525 front door speakers.
Thanks
Erik

Check the ohms rating of your OEM factory speakers. On some models, the dash speakers are 8 ohms and wired directly to the amplifier and the front door speakers are 4 ohms are wired directly to the amplifier. In this case, the 8 ohm speakers can be replaced with 4 ohms. On other models, the dash speakers are 8 ohms and front door speakers are 8 ohms -- wired together in parallel. On all models, the rear door speakers are 8 ohms and the rear speakers are 8 ohms -- wired together in parallel.
When replacing an 8 ohm speaker, do not simply replace with an aftermarket 4 ohms speaker. Make sure it isn't wired together with another speaker in a parallel circuit.
When dash/door speakers are wiring together in a parallel circuit, the ohms resistance at your stereo amplifier must be always be greater than 4 ohms.
Ohms Law for parallel circuits.
8 ohms door speaker and 8 ohms dash speaker
1/8 + 1/8 = 1/Total_R
1/4 = 1/Total_R
Total_R = 4 ohms
--> Stereo Amp will run cool
8 ohms door speaker and 4 ohms dash speaker
1/8 + 1/4 = 1/Total_R
3/8 = 1/Total_R
Total_R = 8/3 (or 2.67 ohms)
--> Stereo Amp does not receive sufficient resistance -- will run HOT.
Your options...
1) solder in a 4 ohm resistor in front of the "+" terminal.
2) unplug the connector of one of the speakers, usually door speakers.
3) Install new wiring circuit for each speaker using 16 gauge wire.
Always double-check ohms impedence at amplifier with volt/multi-meter.

ecsevo705, download the Service Manual for your car (located in the section above the regular forum section for the 850/70 series cars. It's free and I believe I saw a list of speakers in ther with their different Ohm ratings. www.crutchfield.com will also be able to help you and they have good after market stuff.
