Clacking Noise!

Clacking Noise!

2000 v70 xc awd 155k miles

Now I have this terrible clacking noise. The noise is more apparent sometimes than others. However, it makes the noise whether I am going straight or turning. It might be more apparent while turning. Sometimes it gets louder when I step on the gas. Sometimes the noise goes away. The CV boots are not torn. I lifted the front end w/ blocks and jack. I turned the front wheels and cannot hear the noise. I dont' want to start changin the cv axles if they are not the problem. I have done this job before and it isn't particularly fun or cheap. The noise seams to be coming from the front end, but I cannot place it on one side or another. The noise is loud and annoying. It deffinetly has a metalic sound and seems to go w/ the speed of the wheels. I have a new drive shaft (front to back) that is less than a year old. Any suggestions for diagnosing this problem?
