Got my PCV system replaced this weekend

Post by MadeInJapan »

well, I was too lazy so I paid my mechanic to do the dirty job of replacing the PCV system. It took him most of the day but he only charged me $120 cash so I'm happy. Almost all of the little hoses were clogged as was the hose going to the engine from the oil separator (oil trap), so the car breathes much better now. Wow, what a relief. Only thing is that now after I pull the car in the garage, there is a distinct rubber or oil burning or slight fuel smell. The mechanic had to take the fuel rail, injectors, and manifold off for this job. I was wondering if the smell is normal...like the rubber hoses getting acclamated to their new environment, or is this smell some issue, possibly with the injector busings or something? Maybe in a few days the smell will disappear? Anyway, if someone has done this job, could you comment on whether or not you had a smell afterwards or not. I cannot find any oil leaks anywhere and the car is running better than ever....

I got half way through the job and had trouble getting a couple of the new hoses back on plus it was getting pretty cold working in the driveway so I had the car taken to a local Volvo shop for the reinstall. They re-used the injectors and everything works ok.

I did get the "oil smell" for a few days but then it went away. Do you have any leaks?

No leaks that I can tell, but the burning oil smell just didn't go away...after 3 days and 150 miles driven on the interstate...plenty of time for stuff to burn off, so I took the spark plug cover off tonight and found oil under it...only logical place it was coming from was the clamp on the return line from the oil trap that they forgot to tighten when they replaced the pcv system. I cleaned the area up and cinched the clamp down really tight...hope that takes care of things. I'm going to drive around the next few days without the cover to see if any more oil ends up there.

This is an update the next day: I drove to the mall about 10 miles away and back and no oil on the top of the engine. I did however find some coolant on the garage floor this morning when I woke up. Don't know how long it's been there...tracked down the culprit to a slightly loose clamp on my upper radiator hose. Tightened it down and no leaks there either. Don't know why it was loose, but it was. I'll drive the car another day with the cover off and if no issue, then I'll be calling IPD to try to wheel and deal a good price on an ECU upgrade....now that my car is officially at a good stable stage "0."

Anybody have accurate diagram and procedure for flame trap replacement for the 1990 740 gle 234 16 valve engine? I don't see oil drips but I am losing oil and I think trap is clogged resulting in oil seal leakage.

Thanks

To MIJ: That top hose is problematic. When I did my PCV system I noticed the oetiker clamp didn't hold it on very tight. I could slip it off rather easily even after I really squeezed tight on the clamp. I ended up taking it off and cleaning up the hose and the nipple on the valve cover with some brake cleaner and re-installing it with a regular hose clamp. It held much better.

I also noticed when I took the old hose off from the valve cover it was very loose and I could easily lift it off with by hand.

Look on the back side of the block on the passenger side, near the timing belt cover. Hard to explain but it's there.

Hi Firstly thanks to white850turbo for the great writeup on the pcv service. I have pulled it all apart and wanted to aske about the plug part #21 on the diagram. Is this an addition or something specific to your 98? I have a 96 850 turbo. I thought I saw a TSB on something like that. I just got laid off so no more access to alldata. thx kat

I just did the full job myself and replaced ALL small vacuum hoses with blue silicone lines. On my 1994 850T, all my OEM hoses were hardened and cracked; there was no way I was going to reuse them after dropping $125 on the new PVC hoses and investing all that work.

In the end, it took me an additional 2hr to pull the large fresh air intake line from the turbo and properly clean the PTC heater and replace additional vacuum lines. You cannot clean the PTC well when it's on the car. When that big tube is out, then you have easy access to (4) small vacuum lines that need to be replaced.
