DTC: "CCM-DD15 Damper motor, temperature left No communicati

Post by malachi »

I have a 2005 Volvo S40. I took it to the dealer to have a "free" software update. The day after, I found that I have no heat from my HVAC system (blend doors not operating for whatever reason). In addition, the doors that divert airflow to the windshield/dash/floor do not always operate properly/accurately, ie, air flows only to the floor when I want air to floor/windshield - if I select windshield only, then it flows to the windshield. I took it back to the dealer and they did a diagnostic. The car's computer reported Control Module - Diagnostic Trouble Code: "CCM-DD15 Damper motor, temperature left No communication". Also in status column for this same code: "DTC is found not active". The dealer said I need a new climate control unit: Parts = $1300, Labor = $1800 (seems to be a little inflated, eh?). I know the unit is behind the glove box, but have never serviced one before. Can someone tell me if the dealer's diagnosis corresponds with the DTC code I provided, and also with the symptoms I have described regarding airflow? Any and all advice/imput is welcome.

Diagnostic trouble code (DTC) information CCM-DD15

Condition
The diagnostic trouble code (DTC) is stored if the climate control module (CCM) detects an open-circuit in the communication between the climate control module (CCM) and the damper motor module (DMM) temperature left on LIN bus 1.
The diagnostic trouble code (DTC) can occur together with diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) for other components on LIN bus 1 (CCM-DD12 - CCM-DD16) depending on where the open-circuit has occurred.
The diagnostic trouble code (DTC) can be detected at key position 1 or 2 (not key position 3).

Substitute value
None.
Possible source
Open circuit on LIN-bus 1 between Climate control module (CCM) and Damper motor module (DMM) temperature left.
Contact resistance, oxidation or loose connections in the connectors.

Fault symptom
The passenger compartment temperature does not correspond to the set position.

Its possible that is not your only code. Also the software update could potentially fix air distribution problem. If one of those DMM's are bad then it can screw up everything. You most likely have one bad DMM if that is you're only code. Climate control unit usually is the entire climate system under the dash. Its like replacing an engine because you have a bad valve. Its over kill. The part should be way cheaper. But you will still pay a lot in labor to access it. But not as much to replace the whole climate control unit.

I would take it to another capable shop. After thinking about it more, "Damper Motor Identification" and "Climate Control Module Calibration" should be performed after a CCM software upgrade. Before any parts are replaced.

Talking to myself at this point probably. But...
Jackpot. I just found a tech Journal that supports replacement of your Climate Control Unit.

DESCRIPTION: If a customer reports climate system air cycles between the defroster and
floor vents and/or noise when changing distribution selection. The cause is most likely due to
the cam-bracket linked to the distribution actuator or the inner defroster flap within the climate
unit when it changes positions.
An improved cam bracket, climate box housing (larger tolerances), and bearings for the
defroster flap were introduced in production at the applicable chassis numbers in header.
SERVICE: Check for diagnostic trouble codes and any exterior mechanical interference and
take appropriate action.
Be sure the issue can not be corrected with a software (SW) download and/or a system
re-calibration.

Say, "Thanks Ford"
