Mine's chugging along quite happily at 220k. Had a close call when it dumped all the coolant this past weekend, but it's running great! Has occasional puffs of blue smoke at start up, but nothing that worries me. Power is still excellent.

229k and counting on original drivetrain
previous owner had a 120-mile daily commute but treated the car to 5,000 mile oil change intervals with synthetic.

A german import Volvo 855 20v on propane had original drivetrain and no major repair at 600 000 km at my native Volvo forum.
On the local forum many people do burn their valves and I believe its because of leaking valve stem seals. Maybe the oil gets burned off and tricks the oxygen sensor into believing the engine is running rich and then leaning out the mixture increasing temperatures and together with carbon buildups, recipe for burnt valve.
My car has leaking valve stem seals at 280 000 km. I have excellent fuel economy, so I´m waiting for that burnt valve to show up anytime soon.

my 95 10 valve has 390000km so about 240000 miles never been opened up no smoke and compression within 5lb of each other, 94 turbo is barely broken in with 270000 km but I had to do the oil pickup o rings lately but still never opened up- does have a new transmission though

183K on my 98. Zero issues with seals, oil burning etc. Synth every 5K and volvo or mann oil filters. I'm going to drive this car 100 miles every work day for at least 3 more years then retire it and me. Well, that's the plan anyway, hope neither of us dies

just turned 400K on Monday on my 98 S70.
the only thing i've ever done to the engine (other than maint items like timing belt/water pumps/alternators and engine mounts) was the PCV thing and a rear main seal. I do 10K oil changes with synthetic and I have to add a quart every 2,500 miles (but I've always had to to do that).

New guy here.
I'm about to take over ownership of my Mom's third (and last before she passed away in 1998) Volvo, a 1997 850 Sedan. She bought it new, paid cash for it and refused to test drive it at the dealer because she couldn't figure out why she'd want to...she asked the salesman what was wrong with it that she needed to test drive it...she loved screwing with people like that.
The car has over 231,000 on the odometer, original motor and tranny. Now on its third timing belt I believe.
