98 V70 turning signal

I have a few questions about the 1998 V70 truning signal. When I flip on the turning signal on I get one flash and audible click and then it just stops.

1. What relay or similar item makes the turning signal lights flash on and off?

2. Where is it located?

3. What is the part number?

The hazard light switch just above your shifter contains the relay for the turn signals. To remove it, push in the tabs on the sides of the radio and pull it forward. Push out the hazard switch from behind.

P/N 30739334; $55.

Before you buy a new one, take it out and give it a good hard whack with the plastic end of a screwdriver to see if you can un-stick it.

Thanks. Good advice and maybe I'll get lucky. This happens every year when the weather changes here to around freezing at night. Its been just above freezing the past few nights and word is that it started acting up just like it always does. Would you suspect that part to be stuck or faulty if the turning signals don't flash?

Generally, yes, I would say it sounds like a sticking relay. However, by the sounds of it, you may have other electrical shenanigans going on like bad grounding, etc. that may also affect it.

Will the turn signals flash - and continue to flash - if the hazard button is pressed?

Funny thing. After I saw your earlier post this morning I called my daughter to tell her to switch the hazard lights on and off a few times next time her turning signals won't work. She informed me that the night before the hazard lights came on in the middle of the night and flashed until the lights woke her up. She said she switched the hazard lights on and off a couple of times and everything has been working the way it should since. So, now I have a failed/failing or dirty part (or parts) to focus on. There's definitely a problem with the switch or maybe the relay if its a separate part. I put a better ground contact on each of the 10 bulbs in the back by drilling a hole through the sheet metal in the bulb holder and putting a sheet metal screw wrapped with a ring of 12 gauge copper wire which contacts the bulb. The bulbs can't bounce themselves loose now. This was an easy and cheap repair and the only downside is that it now takes a lot of effort to remove and replace the bulbs. Part of testing after the fix was checking the hazard lights so maybe they got stuck half on. Anyhow, I really appreciate your help on this and other posts. Maybe I'll be good to go .... for awhile.....

I have the 2000 S70 with the same problem. JBlackburn do you know if the relay is also in my hazard switch. If so, I will buy the switch from IPD ($57.90) and not from Volvo ($94.27). I will also replace all bulbs and check grounds.

There are a whole bunch of used hazard switches on ebay for $15-$20.

PS: As a last resort, remove the hazard switch, spray some WD-40 to hopefully clean any dirty contacts. This should work.

Yes. If the turn signals simply just don't work at all (don't blink), twitch your ignition key - some cars have problems with the electrical portion of the ignition switch. If that makes it work again, replace the ignition switch. If the flasher gets stuck on, look to the relay in the hazard switch.
