Volvo Repair Database How to read your actual miles from the ECU

Post by MadeInJapan »

Someone try this and if it works, please, Matthew, put this in the Database:

As long as you have the DTC boxes up under the hood ('93-'95).

1. Switch ignition on

2. Connect the fly wire to socket - A7

3. Push button 5 times

4. When LED comes on and stays on, enter code 1-1-1 as follows:
- press the button once when LED is still on
- wait for LED to go out and come on again
- press the button once when LED is still on
- wait for LED to go out and come on again
- press the button once when LED is still on
- read off response, which will be the last three digits of the odometer miles

5. Repeat steps #3-4, but enter code 1-1-2 (that is, press the button twice on the last step); read off the response, which will be the first three digits of the odometer miles. If you have less than 100,000 miles, the first digit will read as 10 blinks.

I had to post and say I think this works. I have a 94 850 and it read off about what I should have as my odometer busted a while back. Very handy! All zeros seem to be ten blinks. no matter what position they are in. Thanks!

cool man! This is great if you get a car with a broken odometer and need to know actual miles...probably other reasons to find the true miles.

Btw, I've been out of country for about a week...back now so I'll be active on this board again.

Interesting this one. I own 3 850 Estates (Wagons) and all are pre 1996 with A + B Sockets under the bonnet. I reset the service light on the 1994 2.0 manual from socket A7 as described and all went fine. I found out that you can check the true mileage from these sockets and while I had the bonnet open I read them from A7 mileage was 38 miles out from the dash odometer which isn't bad over 134,000 miles. All good stuff.

I have a 95 2.4 auto with documented mileage of 81,000 and thought I'd check it.

I put the ignition on and put the flylead in A7. Pressed the button 5 times (each time the led lit up) as told and waited for the LED to respond. It never did. I then tried the service light reset trick of pressing the button once to get it into the correct mode. LED lit up once but never stayed on.

I have a high mileage 95 and tried the same thing on that one and got the same result, nada.

Any idea why I can't get these cars in A7 dignostic mode? I've tried other checks such as A6 and the codes read 1-1-1 as expected so the block is getting power etc. Anybody come across this? It seems strange that out of 3 cars only 1 works as supposed to.

Thanks in advance

When we had an 850 with the black boxes ('94 was ours) I found that it was the speed of which I pressed the buttons that made a difference...don't know why, but I had to press the buttons very very quickly....so I practiced and got a rhythm before pushing the buttons to reset the service light. Could be a similar issue with yours. Give it a try and see if that makes a difference. Don't take your time...get a rhythm in order to push the buttoms quicker.

Wow... let me try this on my 960 and see if it works. My odometer was replaced before and currently reads 016,000 miles ;-)

You need to clear other codes before you start tying to read mileage. Download the free service manual....It will be good for your English practice and also learning about your car.
