The abs issue is a common problem with many good posts with write-ups for fixing. I had the same symptoms as you and solved it by re-soldering the abs module (my issue was dry joints where the diver side rear sensor connects to the pcb)
By far the most difficult part of this fix is to take the module apart as it is "silicone-glued" together.
Good luck

Thanks for the heads up you guys. I should probably rename this thread to "the chronicles of my car luck"
Anyways, I need to have the front suspension checked. After having the control arms put on, I now hear a creaky groaning coming from. One side over some bumps. Mainly when it's cold. My thermostat seems to now be stuck open as it takes forever for the car to heat up. I will be ordering that this week. Along with the ipd sway bars I'm just going to break down and buy instead of trying to just replace the bushings. What else...? Oh yeah, I don't know if it has anything to do with the thermostat but my heat/ac has been acting weird. It works and blows hard as long as I'm going below 10mph.... as soon as I go over that it turns itself almost completely off. Slow down, it starts blowing hard again... I heard the blower motor make a squealing sound once about 3 months ago. I can't imagine that's what it is but I could be wrong.... or could it just be related to the ecc? Sometimes when I start the car, I get the flashing orange lights on the a.c. and recirculation... it all seems kind of weird to me. Any more good suggestions? Also my computer broke so I am relegated to using my phone for everything. Which makes it very tedious at times.. I've got plenty of these stories for my actual project car. Like how after finally getting it going right....the ecu blew up.

This past Tuesday I got some more things done on the car.
I got my needed oil change and added a magnetic drain plug. I didn't buy my own oil this time so I let the shop use some BG. Oil that they recommended.
My thermostat was replaced and the coolant service was done. I was going to change the thermostat myself but almost immediately lost my torx bit into the depths. The car now however warms up like it's supposed to.
I broke down and bought the IPD sway bars. I had them put on along with new front and rear end links. I had asked him to check the front suspension noise I was hearing. He agreed that it looked like the strut bushings were going bad. I also had them replaced. Since the subframe had to be dropped, I had the IPD subframe bushing inserts installed as well. After all of that, I still am chasing another random noise up front. I don't hear it all the time though so it's slightly confusing. The only thing that isn't new up there are the actual struts. Which if I get, the shop said they would put them on for free for me.
Since I just bought all of this stuff from IPD this week, I was disappointed to hear about the black Friday sale. I'm hoping there is a chance they would honor it retroactively for me. If so, there are a few more things I would buy. Just hoping I suppose since I have spent a fair amount of money with them in the recent past.
Anyways, on to the next part of the list....

As of today, I might be parting out this hunk of crap. As I keep fixing the things that break, get it through emissions and think all is well....... Now the angle gear or driveshaft is making a terrible racket. Clunking and pinging. I'm thinking it isn't the driveshaft because it was replaced not too long before I got the car. Seeing as the part is ~$1800 alone I don't know that I will want to fix this one. Nor do I really want to have such a heavy fwd car..... I guess an option is to find an older 97 or so 850 manual and swap over what I can from this car. I don't know right now. I may have finally just had enough.

How much has your Volvo adventure cost so far?
Try it without the 4WD.
Is the black paint on the door frames from the factory or add on?
I would like to paint mine too black. What kind of paint would be best for this application?

Don't give up just yet! If your angle gear is shot, remove the driveshaft and run her as a 2wd car. You can sell the driveshaft to someone who needs it, and your car will function just like any fwd 850/x70. It's a common failure- you can do without it!

From my previous projects I have taught myself not to add up all the costs together. Then I would just feel bad about it. I'll say I'm sure its enough though....EstVolvo wrote:How much has your Volvo adventure cost so far?

The previous owner put this "blackout tape" on it, or that's what he called it. It looks good until you pay attention to it. I was actually thinking about removing it and actually painting it with bed liner. The whole car needs painted though. The roof is really oxidized and the roof rails are faded to grey. I was possibly going to bed liner the entire roof and rails along with the comets that are sitting in my shed for winter wheels. I don't really know what I want to do at this point though....
I did have the driveshaft removed just to have a car to drive. With the caps pushed back you could tell that there was no grease left in them. I did notice that the howling noise I head around 50mph has gone away. I'm thinking the bearings in the angle gear are on the way out. I am looking into possibly having it rebuilt along with a new driveshaft. I would like to have my car functioning as it was intended from the factory, I am kind of ocd like that.....cmblackburn wrote:Don't give up just yet! For now I have to drive it fwd anyway until I get my other car back on the road again.

I've had my V70 AWD worked on be these folks and they are good. Might be worth a call to discuss if it's the right part and all for your R.
I owned an R like yours about 4 years ago and got rid of it for much the same reason, death by a 1000 cuts.
My current 98 V70 AWD has been driving fine for a year and a half without the propshaft.
If you still have your heart set on a sealer for the headgasket, look into SteelSeal. I have it in an 89 Mazda 929 and three years later all is still fine. Stuff won't clog radiators etc.
