How to test and repair your EVAP valve:

Update,

Purge Valve Bosch 0280142300.
Took it out (it sits between the battery and the radiator).
- Two Torx screws later, it is out.
- Changed all hoses (old hose...dry rot)
- The old hoses bonded to the line, so used a utility knife and slice it gently along the hose to split it.

- Blow through valve (NOTE the arrow), it blows right through!
Should have been closed when out of the car.

- No need to disassemble the valve etc.
- Spray Carb Cleaner into both ports.
- Repeat this 10x until no more black gunk comes out
- Now blow through the port (again Note the arrow), it is shut.
So the Carb Cleaner trick did the job!!!

- Installed, all is good.

Anyway, just want to share this FREE fix with you guys!

I'm going to have to try this, I've been running a p0455 code for 2 years now.

You will see that when you remove the Valve, it blows through. The closing mechanism has gunk build-up inside (see the photos at the beginning of this thread) that prevents it from closing. So it stays open all the time, thus the P0440 code.

Once you clean it with carb cleaner, you will see that the valve now closes properly.

It has been a few days, and the code P0440 is gone (usually this code comes up within 1-2 days).
So I am happy about this free fix.

I was looking for this purge valve on my ME7 . Should it be a similar item or is it different?
Where you have the purge valve in the picture i have a different item.
On my car i found a square Valve?

There seem to be at least 3 purge valves for the 1996 850. I don't know what dictates which yours will have. One attaches to the cannister (FCPEuro part 9135805). Two attach to the radiator shroud: Bosch 0 280 142 300 and 0 280 142 302. Those look similar outside but are different inside. The suggested repair procedure is based on the 302. My car, a 1996 850 non-turbo, has the 300. It doesn't have the o-ring so I didn't try to repair it.

The glue on mine was so permanent that I cracked the housing trying to pry it apart. Also, I had no evidence of an o-ring! Did it disintegrate with age? I tried to RTV the inside and epoxy the case, but I am doubtful. I think a new valve may be in my future. We will see. Thanks for the tip none-the-less.

Haha, I think mine has been more than 2 years. I even took it to the dealer to get it "fixed". It lasted a few days - long enough to pass smog inspection test, but then would always come back. It'll be interesting to see if this is the solution for me.

Can this fix be adapted for the square purge valves from a v40/s40? Has anyone had any luck fixing these ones? If so-any information or instructions would be greatly appreciated.
