possibly dead sc 816 hu?
Turned on the car this morning, listened to NPR for about three minutes, and then no sound from my speakers. I look at the dash, my stereo is all lit. So I change to another station, I can hear it for about two minutes, then it also cuts out. On my lunch break right now, and I've got no sound at all, but all the buttons work. display is functioning also. Is it possible the internal amp on my head unit just went kaput? any thoughts would be appreciated guys.

Yes, BEJ. As of this morning, im getting no sound from anything. The tape deck works and I can hear the CD spin, but no sound at all. I did pull out the head unit to see if any wires are loose but not appear to be.

Your radio has two fuses. At this point, it's worth checking them.
#7 is the constant power and #32 is the key operated power.
A funky fuse could be the cause. Or you may just need a new HU.

Both fuses are fine, so im thinking it's stereo replacement time.

The only other things I'd check are the power right at the back of the radio
and the longshot possibility of this car having an external amp with a loose plug.
Both of these are easily checked without unplugging the radio.
Remember - IF YOU UNPLUG THE RADIO, YOU"LL NEED THE SECURITY CODE !
Pull the radio and see if there's a round plug at the bottom corner: If it's there, be sure it's plugged in securely.
The power connections are violet/yellow on pin 13 for switched ( I suspect it's good )
and two Green/Browns on pins 4 & 12 for constant ( This is the one I'd look harder at ).
If you do indeed have a trashed radio, you have plenty of options.

I'm getting ready to replace my working SC816 in the next week, if that will help.

Thanks, David! With me just starting a new job, I will have to get a new stereo in February or so; money is too tight to get one just yet.
