alternator pulley nut torque

I recently purchased an 85 740 turbo diesel that had sat in the desert SW for several years and am bringing it back to life. It certainly has been an interesting project. The car did not have an alternator on it when I bought it, and the first one that was sent did not fit (pulley shaft too long). So now I have the right pulley and have swapped it out, but can't find the correct install torque. Any ideas, and also what is the right way to hold the pulley stationary while tightening? thanks

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.

The correct torque for the pulley is 23 - 29 ft.lbs or 3 - 4 nm. The last time I did this job I wedged a piece of soft wood in the alternator fan.

Plumber strap wrench or oil filter strap wrench also is a way to counter hold the pulley while tightening the nut

The correct torque for the pulley is 23 - 29 ft.lbs or 3 - 4 nm.
23 - 29 footpounds would be in the range of 36 - 45 Nm (One footpond converts to 1.356 Nm approx)
Example of Precision: Measure with a Micrometer, mark it with Chalk, and then cut it with an Axe.
