My 99 C70 needs a transmission, what other Volvo models fit?
It's in limp home mode and the shop said the car needs a transmission even though it runs fine once you get up to speed., i.e. no slipping or strange noises. Just no first or second gear. It's got 150,000 miles. Anyway I'll be looking for a used transmission or may even buy a driveable parts car so at least I know the transmission is good. What year and model range Volvo used this transmission? My car has the 2.4L turbo engine.
How long have you had this limp home mode ? Is this a Volvo diagnosis? If not you might try disconnecting the battery for a few minutes to (hopefully) clear the problem. remember you need to reset the radio code.
i'm having a similar problem in a car i JUST BOUGHT. i got a 98 s70 on saturday and it ran great. after a few days of driving it though, it started to make some awful noise when i'm easing off the clutch in 1st (it's a manual).
how much did the place tell you it would be to repair it?

I would get a second opinion. Did it set a code? If so read it and see what it is. To me it sounds like Camshaft position sensor and possibly not the transmission.atikovi wrote:It's in limp home mode and the shop said the car needs a transmission even though it runs fine once you get up to speed., i.e. no slipping or strange noises. It has codes P0758 for a shift solenoid and P1618 which I couldn't find a definition for. Not sure what the Camshaft position sensor has to do with the transmission not shifting. How hard to remove a transmission from a car at a junk yard? Does it come out the bottom or top? Is it easier to pull it out with the engine attached and then take it apart on the ground? How can I get the odometer to come on in a junk yard car to check the mileage? They don't allow you to bring in a car battery. Can I use a 9 volt radio battery or a 18 volt cordless drill battery? Does the ignition switch need to be turned on for the odometer to come on? Most cars don't have keys.

P1618 typically means that their's a fault in the wiring between the transmission and the ECU (got this from a search on Volvospeed message board). I would trace the problem down before assuming that you need a new transmission. Btw, you can either pull the engine out with the transmission attached from the top or lower out of the bottom by detaching the subframe. Either way, you'll have to support the engine from above. The transmission is detached after the two come out together.
