Upper Windshield "Reveal Molding": Generic Stuff?

Post by cn90 »

My Upper Windshield "Reveal Molding" probably flew off at highway speed, nowhere to be found and I have not heard from it for a long time.

I understand this piece is strictly cosmetic and does not seal any water.

Volvo dealer wants $45-$50 for this piece of junk.

My question is: is there generic stuff (kind of T-shaped in cross profile) from Ford, GM or other cars that fit here for cheap?

Yes, there is, but it shrinks end to end over time. By the Volvo one.

Same issue here cn90. I would love this fix.
Molding was lost, now the plastic under it is chipping, see photo.
Local volvo shop wants $200.

I am stopping by the hardware store today to see if I can buy some kind of black vinyl molding and use caulking stuff to glue it.
Stay tuned.

I am very interested in this one, two of my three 850s lost that piece. The reason to re-install it is the increased wind noise when it is missing.

erik,

I guess you can put some black electrical tape on until you find the solution.
The hardware stores have something interesting but I don't have time to get to it yet.

Found this sealant holding well between glass and plastic at the lower molding. It was needed after a cleanup of years of collecting dirt debris under the cowl/drain, installing the cabin air filter assembly, and restoring wiper arm and blades.

Yes, there is.
Last winter the guy from Safelite came to my house replacing my wife's windshield. I asked if he could replace that piece for my wagon. He went back to his truck and cut a piece from a huge spool (must use that a lot). It fits perfectly...

Thanks Al,

I called a local auto glass shop today and he told me to come by this afternoon.
Like you said, it comes from a spool....about $2/ft x 5ft = $10 or so.

These "there is a spool" comments all confirm what ThommyKent originally posted.

So at $20-30 a pop, maybe replacing it twice (because the generic stuff won't last very long) is better than the quality OEM piece once at $50 plus installation hassle/cost. I think installing the OEM piece properly would require the windshield to come out.
