Problem after transmission fluid change

Post by Francois850 »

Hello, I replaced the transmission fluid on my Volvo 850 non turbo, I used the recommended fluid etc. proper quantity. This was a preventive maintenance operation, transmission was fine but fluid looked dirty. Mileage was about 35K on it. Since then, the transmission shifts fine but, the car won't accelerate well, clutch is obviously slipping and I am lucky if I reach 40mph. When the transmission is cold, it acts just fine but it deteriorates rapidly within minutes. Any clue what I can do to improve things? I heard some additives may help but... My C.E.L. is not on and I have no codes. Thanks in advance, I am really bummed out!

Please check the transmission fluid level. Let us know where it reads on the stick (the readings will be different on each side of the stick are you going by the lower one or the higher one?)

I did and followed the Volvo procedure (engine running etc...) and it's just fine.

Are you using the top side or bottom side of the stick to read it ?

I used the "hot" side and it was good. I drove the car prior and transmission was hot.

Initially I used DEX / MERC Valvoline, was told to change it to Mobil 1 Synthetic, either way it was the same exact result... Don't think the fluid is the issue here...

Tell me about the level on the dipstick. Many times they enter at a steep angle and some mistake the high reading on the backside as correct instead of the low level on the top.

After rechecking the fluid level make sure that neither of the axles popped out.

You are correct, I noticed that, the level (where it's wet) is often different on each side, so which one to pick?
