New owners of 2000 S70 need code advice

Post by mercurysys »

We recently acquired a 2000 S70 SE that has the following codes:

P0135
P0507
P0713
P0717
P0768
P1618

From what I have found so far the P0135 is the front O2 sensor, but unable to identify the other codes. The car is jerky shifting from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd, also sometimes from park to reverse. Not sure if it is tied to one of the above codes or not.

We are wondering if you could identify what needs to be fixed/replaced for the above codes and in order of priority. It would be greatly appreciated.

We are looking at purchasing VADIS, I think it is called, to help with any future issues.

The P0135 code is the heater circuit on the front oxygen sensor. Most of the time it is the heater itself but it can also be a wiring or connector problem. Use a DVM to check the resistance between the two white wires going to the sensor. The resistance should be very low, like under 20 Ohms, for a good sensor. If it has very high resistance or just shows an open circuit the heater is bad and thus the sensor is bad. If the sensor itself checks out OK then look for problems in the connector and then the wiring harness.

P0507 is an Idle air control system fault. The idle air is controlled by the Electronic Throttle Module in your car and it may be that the butterfly valve in the module is just dirty and it won't close down all the way. Hopefully your ETM has a yellow label on it rather than a white label.

The P0713 Code is a high temp code for the transmission.
The P0717 Code is an transmission input RPM speed error.
The P0768 Code is a transmission shift solenoid D error.
The P1618 Code is a transmission communications error code.

Is your ABS or Tracs light on? Do they come on with the key in position II? A bad ABS module can explain part of the transmission problems but not all of them.

Your transmission should be a 5 speed automatic which is quite trouble prone. Sometime flushing the fluid can correct some of its ills but that transmission uses insanely expensive JWS3309 fluid. Insanely expensive being over $30.00 / quart. I think the best prices on the fluid are through Toyota dealers but it is still very expensive.

I think my next step would be to run it by a transmission shop for an evaluation. On the whole, transmission shops are run by out and out criminals and unfortunately I can't recommend any one shop over another. Whatever you do, don't leave the car with them. I took in a Jeep that drove poorly but it did drive to a Cottman Transmission shop and I came back to find that they had removed the transmission and torn it down - I was stuck. AAMCO has pulled the same crap on me with a Suburban.

Many, many 2000 Non turbos for sale now.
My guess is that 50% of them are having transmission issues
