Re: Audio upgrade 1998 V70: Dolby, amp, speakers

Reading some other threads, I think I get it: the amp I have DOES go under the seat, hence the length of the cable. This was the image that came up, and Jim (JRL) chimes in about the same upgrade. In there it's said that Dolby doesn't do much without the center speaker running. That leaves two plugs unused.

Is the one marked "CD" where the ipod adapter goes? Now that I have this stuff on the kitchen table it's starting to make sense.

It must be well away from the HU judging by the length of the harness.
The cable shown in the middle of the picture is for the passenger seat. The one coming from the radio is wired in the amplifier !!

I would say that answered my question about taking the seat out and placement. Thank you! I don't think it will be too practical to properly install in such a tight space with my meat hooks.

Check this out... remove the vertical screws (only three - red circles !!!) and the seat will tilt back so you can get to the floor. ;)

Will do, thanks. You think I will find holes for the mounting flange and wiring on an example that didn't come with the amp? I'm hoping so.

Yes, the '98 is pre-configure for this upgrade. You have to remove a small, "pre-cut" piece of carpet to reveal the screws nuts. They are embedded there so you need suitable bolts (sorry, can't remember the size!)

Wow. The amp went in just as described. HU was a breeze to pop in. CD player worked straight away.

I'm astounded by the quality of the sound from a CD source. Played 1 hr of reference tunes. Ears bled.

Decided against Dolby processor. Next up is the blitzsafe Ipod adapter. The cheapo headphone jack mod was tempting, but I think I prefer all in one charging and signal connection.

Thanks to all who helped, especially JRL for sending me a prefect harness and working amp.

The saga continues. I'm blessed with a mechanically sound car, so I can move on to upgrades and spit shine.

WTH is up with the 12v power source. So much conflicting info. I found a source that said black/yellow (alone on the one plug) was ignition on 12v. Clipped up to that but nope, no go. Then I found this:

http://www.tehnomagazin.com/Auto-radio- ... nector.htm

The previous source suggested there is some confusion about which is which and which is best. Blitzsafe suggested 12v through ignition on was fine and it charged for 20 minutes after shut down. Whatever. I never leave my phone/ipod in the car. So how about always on 12v?

That was supposed to green/brown, but there are TWO identical green brown wires. Color me confused.

I searched here and there some but came back to the original sources. The single black/yellow I'm hooked up to now can't be it because it neither shows charge on the phone or plays music. It's really easy to get to though, so I'm not discouraged. Any help is appreciated.

12v constant is green/brown. Hooked it and still no go.

Glad I paid retail from the manufacturer because the unit is faulty and they are sending a new one. Kinda PITA, but hey, I ended up with a decent multi tester.

If you decide, I have a Dolby processor, harness AND the un-obtanium center speaker harness/wires
All you then need to do is find a dash with a hole in it, but a center speaker and upgrade
Oh, and it DOES make a BIG difference even without the center speaker if you're in Dolby mode
Mod note. Jim passed away in early 2022, his contributions to this forum are immortal, and he is missed. RIP
