Rear Brake lights kaput?

Stumped Easily on this deceptively simple problem-
checked all fuses (good), checked the bulbs (good, no breaks in the filaments anyway)
and do not know what to do next. Is there an internal computer that may have fuzzed? Do I have have to trace the wiring all the way from whatever voltage source powers the lights?
All the other rear lights work.

Does the high level brake light work or have you lost all three?

If you have lost all three it could be a faulty brake light switch. This is easy to check by removing the two connectors and connecting them with a jumper wire. If the brake lights come on it is a faulty or dirty switch.

If you have lost only the two lower brake lights it could be a faulty bulb failure sensor which you will find on the relay tray behind the front ashtray. It is the round unit on the back row of the tray.

Wow-Thanks guys, I will put that knowledge to use. Meanwhile, How do I keep from getting my gas stolen like it was last night? I have a locked gas cap, but these guys must have used a bumper key because the cap wasn't damaged. I check the cap every time I go somewhere, so if it spins (left) like it should when I've locked it, I don't worry. However when it starts to unscrew, that means it's been unlocked....
