well, i have to drive my car a lot so i was looking for something that i could get yesterday locally and put in the same day. i was also told on another message board that the ngk's work great with these cars, so that's what i got since i can get it locally and cheap too(1/3 the price of the platinum +4's that i'm now selling to a friend). bosch wires are what was in my car before i got it and never had any problems with them in the 20,000+ miles that i used them, so i'll save my hundred dollars on the wires until they cause issues. everything seems fine so far with the ngk's, but then again, everything was fine with the plat4's for over a month. the plugs seem to be have been doing a good job with a slight grey tint to the tip and no signs of a lean or rich condition. i can't tell any difference in performance or smoothness of idle with the ngk's vs. the plat4's. my car may just not like the premium fuel + FIC that i've been using lately. anyways, so how would i test the wires to see if they are operating to specification? i really do appreciate the help and am not trying to go against your wishes, just wanted to get something locally so that i could drive my car without worrying.

Dear Bigmuse

Did you fix your problem, I have a similar problem as you have and did exactly what you have done. Replaced parts as follows:

Bosch spark plugs purchased from the Volvo Dealer
Cap and Rotor Purchase from the Volvo Dealer
Bosch Ignition wires purchased from Lordco our largest local auto parts supplier

Looking forward for your reply.

changed the plugs again and tested the wires, all ended up with the same problem. ended up just not worrying about it for a while and then i got one of the high dollar fuel system treatments. i had been using the little 2 dollar FIC and fuel treatments. got one of the complete fuel system treatments that are about $15 and it cleared everything up. cleared up occasional rough idle as well as the check engine problem... apparently had a partially clogged injector. hope this helps... the bosch wires are fine, but they have been known to separate near the boot easily.

you are having multiple misfires so i doubt yours is because of a clogged injector though unless you got some dirty gas and had it clog a few

You changed to the bosh copper pugs, that's good!
Now change to the bougicord wires
If that doesn't do it, then fuel filter.
These cars are picky what they run well on and what they don't.

People have told you well...now to follow is another matter.

i'm still using the ngk v-power plugs and bosch wires. i truly think it was just a clogged injector all along because the fuel system treatment cleared the problem right up. the bosch wires have been tested with a multimeter and are well within spec.

I doubt if it my Spark plugs or wires, as the codes are on multiple cylinders and I find it hard to believe that multiple plugs from Volvo including the wires will be faulty and that is two sets of them. I replaced my fuel pump and fuel filter about nine months ago when my fuel pump went out on me.

In anyway, the following parts from FCP Groton are enroute on a special 2 day delivery:
- bougicord wires (set)
- Volvo genuien plugs (Turbo) $32/set
- Thermostat (87 deg - Varnet)
- ECT sensor
- O'rings for fuel injectors (lower & upper)
- Turbo o'ring and gasket Kit
- Throttle Body gasket
- EGR valve gasket
- Air Filter
- Mann Oil Filter
- I wished I included the fuel filter - forgot.

So you see Made in Japan - some one do listen to your advice and pays attention and Thanks for your valuable input. I hope I can get all of the above completed this weekend and I shall report back.

Thank you Bigmuse, by the way I did run a fuel injectors cleaner thru the injectors with the OTC fuel injector cleaner using the OTC Appratus, this is a great little device to have to periodically cleaning the injectors, you need compress air though.

Thanks u guys

Received my parts from FCP Groton and I am pissed because they advertised Vernat Thermostat, but they shipped out a Scan Tech thermostat. I have heard mostly bad things about Scan Tech, I will probably send that back and buy a thermostat from Volvo unless I can find a whaler thermostat locally - just can't wait a week for a small part.

Has anyone any suggestions on the Scan Tech thermostat?

I will do as much as I can and report back.

I hate to hear that about the thermostat. I would probably use it anyway. I have never read any posts that they are bad, but then again, it may be pretty new in terms of what they carry, so it could be just that no one has used them yet. If you do send it back and buy one from the dealer, let me suggest that you also buy a couple of screws for the thermostat housing. I buggered mine up taking them out and needed replacements. They are fairly cheap.
Good luck and keep reporting what's going on with your car. I'm curious too to see if the bougicord wires solve your misfire issue.

I'm not a big fan of Scan Tech parts (see the post I just put up on Scan Tech control arms that turned to junk in 23K miles), but I have a Scan Tech termostat that's been installed for a year or so and has worked fine so far.
