I wanted to say integral or even intrinsic but not intricate. Sorry

Additionally, I wanted to say "personal belief" not "personal believe". Again I apologize; the voice texting is prone to mistakes that from a phonetic standpoint are not absurd but are still very annoying.

So, thats a negative on the fix. It does seem that it only gives me that sharp whack when it is warm. I hesitate to say that I am familiar with expansion and contraction for fear that I wil not provoke someone into explaining the concept to me complete with all of the trimmings; but please feel free to state your theories, they may help someone.

The thermal expansion is a problem. I have a couple of 850s that squeak like crazy if they get parked in direct sunlight or even if I run the defroster when it is cold. In my case (since those aren't the cars that I drive) I am just waiting to deal with the noise issues while I am changing the evaporator cores. I have two of them that need the new cores and they just happen to be the squeakers.

Couple of comments

My a/C on my 99 T5 is out and I'm pretty sure it's the evaporator, so I'm following this thread on dash removal to get up the gumption to do it.

If I were putting screws into plastic in hard to reach places, a dab of medium holding strength LocTite might be in order to keep screws in place.

Admittedly, I have not read this entire thread. Haven't even scrratched the surface, really. However, given that it has been around for going on five years and has (currently) five pages of responses, I'm sure that there is copious amounts of useable information. Thanks to all who have contributed.

Lee, or anyone else who has attempted this. What type of clearance is there? Obviously this modification has to be very small and be snug against both areas. I like how Lee did his, however, should I be concerned about the two screws on each side rubbing through wiring? Or creating a bigger gap?

This will be dash pull #2 for me.

Getting excited!!

I've seen some rather extensive, admirable efforts made to "remedy" this inherent/inevitable problem with "floppy" Volvo dashboards of the era. Originally thought this was due to FoMoCO accountants coming in and stripping out the quality of plastics used - only to learn from Ozark Lee that is was just Volvo being green that caused them to ship "born-to-fail cars" out the door to an unsuspecting public. And therein lies the problem - this problem is UNFIXABLE. Efforts to mend with strengthening epoxies and aluminum supports are laudable, and well beyond my level of commitment. (Did try Code-Man 850's side clip approach on one side - only to find that it made the problem worse.)

HENCE, I propose a new SOLUTION:
Inflatable bicycle tire tubes inserted underneath the forward edge of the dash and inflated until the "force" dash-, pad/underlying -board press against each other thus solving the rattle problem.
Ghetto to be sure, only itz easy and likely to cope with any future "floppiness" with the push of a pump. There is enough room between my windshield and dashpad now to insert the tube. More can be added later. I let you know how it werkz.
Cheers!
