I had problems with my pnp switch. It kept me from driving my 850 t5 turbo for almost a year! Turns out I had two problems at the same time. The ignition switch contacts were worn out and the pnp switch was out of alignment.
To test your pnp switch: 1. disconnect the connector by lifting up the metal tab. 2. the pins are numbered 1 through 9 with one being toward the front of the vehicle on the left hand side (passenger side). The first row is 1,2, 3 then toward the back of the vehicle 4,5,6 and then 7,8,9. 3. In park you will have continuity (a closed circuit) between pins 7 and 6, and between 4 and 1. In reverse it is between 9 and 5. In Neutral it is between 4 and 2, in drive it is between 2 and 3. If your pnp gives you these results, the switch is good. Loosen the bolts and change the alignment!
pnp switch replacement
Replaced pnp switch(took four hours).Backup lights working great. No more code 313.Will not shift out of park unless I use the shiftlock button and all of the lights(w,s,e)are flashing along with the arrow on the dash.If your a volvo rookie like me it boggles the mind!

I have a 94, 960 and for some time have been experiencing this dreaded flashing arrow, combined with the E S W buttons flashing. The OBD code I get is 3 1 3.
This symptom is intermittent and seems to happen more when the vehicle has been sitting overnight especially when the outside temperature is low( over summer when day temps are over 30C and night temps are over 20C all is good) as soon as night temps start to drop to below around 15C problem returns.
I reset code and all is good until the next morning. When vehicle is warm doesn't happen.
If allow to idle for 10-15 minutes doesn't seem to occur, maybe luck.
I can move out of park into reverse and drive in reverse as soon as I select Dive, flashing arrow.
Ignition switch replaced with genuine parts recently.
There was a post about cleaning PNP switch, cant seem to find it again but more the point where do I locate this switch.
Thanks in advance

Sorry it took me so long to find this post but it was an unintentional find from a post you made about a 960 throttle plate fitted to a 850.
Anyway the PNP is on the driver's side of the gearbox on the opposite side to the selector linkage so on the exhaust side. I recently cleaned a PNP in a 960 after swapping in a Toyota auto 'box (big job, not easy but worth it in the end) The PNP is a large rotary shaped aluminium housing with a large plug, perhaps six pins. Inside it are many spring loaded copper contacts that require filing and retensioning
The problem I used to have with my own 960 was lots of codes including trans codes until I swapped out all the ignition coils. They were arcing badly and causing the engine and trans CPUs to call up phantom codes. The clue to your problem is the temps. When coils are damp they arc out a lot more. Hope this helps.
Cheers Mike
